I like how the Laser Squad loading screen seems to have been the inspiration for the cover box of one of its descendants: X-Com Apocalypse.

Great vid, Geoffster. Brought back some memories of getting up early on a Saturday morning, when my folks were still hung over, and I had access to the big telly in the front room. As an aside I used to laugh at the fantastic cover art on all those Atari 2600 cartridges and then you load the thing and it was like two dots flashing on the screen. The Spectrum wasn't so bad and the cover art on the cassettes didn't tend to be as elaborate, or it would be very British and almost punkish with grotesque shit like toilets mixed with Monty Python visuals. The Spectrum and its game are truly unique: they document a bizarre sub culture in late 20th century Britain.

Glad you enjoyed it and it brought back memories. I remember my parents buying a cheap second hand TV as I always wanted to have my Spectrum on whatever the time of day. There's always been a level of artistic license with things like box art. I don't mind the box art being creative I didn't like screen shots from other machines that made the games look much better than they were. I bought V based on Amiga screenshots and was very disappointed when I loaded it up :(.

Not a bad selection. Off the top of the head I'd have put; Fairlight Alien 8 Firelord Nodes of Yesod and not sure if this one counts, but I'd also put Technician Ted for the cool animated Teds walking about.

Wizball and Head Over Heels were also classics. I have a vague idea of Mike being good, but can't recall if that was on the speccy or C64. Before watching the vid I tried to guess what you might have, especially for number 1. The loading screen that came to mind was Rambo, so I guessed right... that said, that Rex screen is fantastic. I never got to play Rex back in the day, so that is the first time i've seen that- beautiful artwork. I think that would be my numero uno.

I guess these really are a matter of opinion. None of the ones you've featured would come close to my own personal top 10, except maybe the one you gave a dishonourable mention to, The Hobbit which I felt fit the game really well. Personally I feel it reflects the fairly basic art style the game had but also sets the tone well, it's a fantasy adventure for kids, depicted with a drawing that mimics by how a kid might draw such things but at the same time you can tell it was intentional because despite looking a little rudimentary it's well thought out. It also makes what is actually a very complex adventure game for the period a lot less intimidating so you're more likely to play it. The 'new' title screen just seems too serious and lacks character. If I was picking myself I think there would be more of the Codemasters ones up there; as somebody has already pointed out the Treasure Island Dizzy one was great (as were most of the Dizzy games actually, aside Crystal Kingdom, but that was just entirely trash anyway) Those also doubled up as the game border, so were functional loading screens as well as decorative. While they all followed the same basic template the Magic Knight title screens (specially Spellbound) stick in memory too. Some of the animated ones (Technician Ted, Starquake) were also rather interesting, although I guess I wouldn't count them as a loading screen, nor would I count the ones that were just simple text messages. I did like what Pyramid / Doomsday Castle did tho and remember hacking into the loader back in the day just to get it to draw in different colours :-) My gut feeling is however that a lot of your choices might be more influenced by the memory of playing the games, and the excitement of them loading, than the actual screens? In the end it is all personal preference tho.
@geoffneil5073

Interesting comments. I see what you are saying about the Hobbit but I was still disappointed by it as a kid. I'd have much preferred the Mick Farrow one back then I'm sure. As for being influenced by what I played that's true, of course, as I only considered games from my top 100. That means that none of the Code Masters games were ever in the running as I never owned them and have never played them. I don't think it had that much of an influence though. I slated "The Lord of The Rings" in my top 100 yet really rate the loading screen for example. Also none of my top ten made the list, in fact the only one that came close was Atic Atac. I'm glad you appreciate the Pyramid and Doomsday Castle too. There is something very elegant about what they did along with Bugaboo too. I agree it is personal preference though I guess it is art so is always going to be subjective. Thanks for the long comment though it was great to read it.

Hi Geoff, sounds like you might be from Richmond or Darlington with that accent - tell me I'm wrong! Enjoying your top 100s etc and contributions to speccy show. They should have loading screens on the PS4. It took 2 hours to install Red Dead Redemption2 today! Not for me, as i don't play modern games but the missus does! I was a 64 owner but looking back I see how the Speccy was full of character and it's visuals had real english charm.

I'm from near that area but a bit closer to the cost. I was a N64 owner as well and really loved the games for that console. I almost but not quite completed Golden Eye on 007 mode I got a bit fed up with how hard the last couple of levels were so gave up and dropped down to Secret Agent mode. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos, I've not posted one for a while but I have a bit of time on my hands so I might change that and post one or two new ones.

I did get an N64 late on and as with most Nintendo stuff it was superb - Starfox, Mario 64 etc - its analogue controller remains one of the best controllers to this day IMO.
