Amazing transport,,my Meridian 200 uses one,,still going strong after 30 years...

It's hard to believe that ALL three screws could be completely loose. This sounds to me like someone has been playing with this mechanism before or it is a defect simulated by someone.

Yeah, pretty weird, but in the course of 30 years, they could've rattled out one by one. I guess?

Punching and pressing on that motor shaft is a LOT of stress on the motor bushings and bearings. If the screws were loose enough to be hitting the spindle, only then is it worth removing the spindle,. Otherwise, just hot glue the motor into position.

Checked mine, motor all secure, thanks for the heads up though would love to get some oil on it! All the PCB screws had thread lock on them but that's Rotel I doubt they touch the mech. I see all the black gates are now silmic 2s.

Yours had the Silmic II's? Or did you mean mine? I figured that even Blackgates get old but that I'd better replace one overpriced cap with another! Although, I gotta say, the Silmic II's were amazingly consistent in value within the batch.

@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi I meant that yours has changed to silmic2 it is one of the best caps. I have two of these players now both with black gate and I wonder whether to replace them, I've heard that they are not the highest grade black gate and why so large at 100uf. So far I've seen 4.7uf bipolar, 47uf polar in players, in theory the signal ought to be ok at about 3uf ok fine give it lots of room but 100uf is a lot. Anyway great lively sounding player future classic.

The one in the video was for a friend. I have a second that I bought for myself, and I haven't done any work past boiling the belt for the door. So far it's fine with the original caps, but old caps are a crap shoot. You won't know they're out of spec until you measure them, and you have to take them out of circuit to measure them, and at that point you should probably just replace them if you have suitable replacements. And you always risk catastrophic failure with old caps. The 100 uF Blackgates are large, both size and value, but I wouldn't second guess the designer's choice when replacing them. Smaller values would have been cheaper, so they probably had a compelling reason to go as large as they did. And if I'm going to replace Blackgates, that's one time at least that I'm going with Silmic II's.

Yikes! The first receiver I restored was an NAD that I bought new in the early 90's and had been in nearly constant service for over 25 years. Some of the caps were so far out of spec, I was surprised it still sounded OK at all!

Good vid! If you had the choice, what would you choose, RCD-855 or RCD-955AX, and why? Thx!

RCD-855. They're nearly identical, but I've read that the 955AX just doesn't sound as good. In one post I read, someone had discovered that there was one small circuit modification that could fix the 955AX, something like adding or removing a jumper. But, if the general opinion is that the 855 sounds better, I'd rather not get the 955AX on the say-so of one poster in a hi-fi forum.

@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi Thx a lot. You mean this statement: "Someone, somewhere has made the decision to connect an earth tag between the circuit ground and the player’s metal chassis. Connect a 100 ohm resistor in its place and the RCD-955AX ‘\s restored to its former glory…" If I only had more info on this…where's that earth tag located, do you have any idea or more info on this?

hello, sir, would you by chance be willing to help resurect a working Magnavox AMP 185 AA into something basic similar to what your video describes? thanks much

@@Lancaster_Hi-Fi I was going to grab one that is for sale but since its only a power amp, am now looking to find a integrated old low power tube...I do like the sound of that magnavox from what ive heard...but if I got that, I'd basically just want to get it running and safe, and if the couple tweeks done on the one you had are simple, add it/them.

I'm sorry for not responding until now! KZitem doesn't alert me to replies, so I'm still learning how to find these threads. Did you end up finding an integrated tube amp?
