Unlike popular belief, the Turks do not originate from Anatolia, but from the far-away lands of Central Asia. Have you ever heard of the mythical she-wolf Asena who gave birth to all Turkic peoples? When a young boy lost his family during a foreign invasion, he wandered off to the steppes of modern-day Mongolia. On his way, Asena picked him up and escorted him to a secret cave. He stayed with her, grew up and mated with the she-wolf. Asena then gave to ten boys, who were according to legend half wolf, half human. All of them gave them names, left the cave area, mixed with the surrounding families in the Altai and then returned in larges masses to take revenge upon the murder of their father and common ancestor.
This myth served as a metaphor for the rise of the legendary "Celestial Turks", known as "Göktürks" in Turkish. Their ruling dynasty was called Ashina in direct reference to the she-wolf of the legend. While the rulers of the Gokturks were conquering the Eurasian Steppe, they would always have their bodygards at their side - their name was "börü", meaning wolf, again based on the Asena legend.
But what are the actual sources for their story? The Ashina clan lived for generations in and around the Altay Mountains - but when a young man called Bumin become the leader of the tribe, he would start a rebellion against the mighty Anagui of the Rouran Khaganate. Within a few years, Bumin and the Ashina family established what became the largest Steppe Empire until the creation of the Mongol Empire by Genghis Khan.
