@@HistorywithCy Is there any good reason why Naram-Sin sacked Nippur? Sure, pride, yadda yadda yadda, but I would love to know his reasoning for doing such a (stupid) thing. His dealing with the ever present rebellions upon being handed kingship showed he was strong, but also had intelligence. He deflected and defeated a trident, of sorts, with the Kish and friends rebellion. Thats very note worthy. Even more noteworthy is his sacking of Nippur, the source for his empires eventual demise, in my opinion. But I have a feeling you will be addressing just that in a future video, from what you said at the end of the video. Thats some interesting stuff, that whole matter.
@HistorywithCy

@@Eabatu Hi! Naram-Sin and Nippur are really interesting. In the epic poem the Curse of the Agade, Naram-Sin does sack Nippur because he grows impatient with Enlil (the patron deity of Nippur) for not answering his questions about drought and the overall misfortune within his realm. One would think that this may have been based on some historical event but thus far, archaeologists haven't found any evidence of him sacking the city. On the contrary, there are ample inscriptions and edicts with regard to how he bestowed many gifts on Nippur and Enlil's great temple, the Ekur. So this is a really interesting thing to research... did he actually sack Nippur or was it some later propaganda/slandering of Naram-Sin by a Sumerian author who was trying to justify the fall of Agade and the arrival of the Gutians into Mesopotamia. It's definitely something that I want to examine further. Thanks again for stopping by and your thought-provoking comments... I really appreciate them!

@@HistorywithCy I think the priest class of Sumer did not like how Naram-Sin openly proclaimed his divinity. No matter how nicely he refurbished the temples of the divine in their appropriate city, his actions were full of hubris and disrespect to the gods, and Enlil did not approve of it. Also, he took credit for the rays that Shammash supplied him, something I would assume the Sumerian priest class would see as nothing less than an insult to Shammash. Naram-Sin is one of histories most interesting Kings. His grand father Sargon, another. I just wish we knew more of the specifics during the time of Sargon's ascension to the throne of Akkad. That one tablet detailing the specifics in dealing with Lugalzagesi, being destroyed, well, I doubt it was an accident it is destroyed. Anyways, your videos are cool. You break it down in a easy to grasp way. In my opinion, if maps are not shown when explaining the rule of rulers, it is being explained wrong. Things were quite different and more volatile in those times. Maps show this, and thus give appropriate context.

Hey Cy 🙂 great work you're doing! I love watching & listening... seems to me you have a gift! Definitely your vids are a gift to me! Why did Narum - Sin end up with such a negative history lesson when he was so good at his "job"? Because of "becoming" a god?
@HistorywithCy
3 жыл бұрын
My pleasure, glad you like this! With regard to your question, I think it could have been for several reasons. The epics where he's put in a negative light were written during the Neo-Sumerian period, and so perhaps it was a cautionary tale with the antagonist being an Akkadian king who was known to have brutally repressed the cities of Sumer during what was known as the "Great Revolt." The other thing is that he was probably the last Akkadian king of any significance... everyone would have still remembered and known who Naram-Sin was, but perhaps not his successors Shar-kali-sharri. He was quite a celebrity even after death and so a tale where he was the star would have done well amongst a Sumerian audience. Just my thoughts... thanks for stopping by, really appreciate it! As far as I know, the predominant language of the Akkadian empire was Akkadian, a semitic language related to aramaic, and modern day Hebrew and Arabic. If your talking about the names of Akkadian rulers, I have no idea. However farther south, in cities like Ur, Uruk and Lagash, I've heard the main language there was Sumerian, a language isolate with no known ties to any other languages we know of. Maybe its possible that Sumerian is very distantly related to some non indo-europian language found in india.

Not really, they don't really sound close to Sanskrit. We are so used to western languages, that anything that is different sounds similar to us.
