While not healthy and toxic, Nate's dynamic with Jules was one of the most compelling aspects of season 1. I’m glad Levison decided to address it even if their arc together ends here. Nate’s behavior is awful, as shown moments before this scene occurs, but the character is so interesting. With Jules, the character always seems to let his guard down and to take off his mask if only for a moment. Nate is lying to himself on so many things, including his feelings for Jules, and yet he couldn’t be more obvious if he tried when he’s alone with her, hidden away in a car or under bedsheets. This scene shows him smiling, almost giddy, around Jules and more vulnerable than he’ll ever admit. It really is fascinating.

Exactly! So well said, I wish people would stop projecting their hatred of Nate as a person so strongly and immediately shut his arc down and instead step back and appreciate the writing of his character's progression as very complex and one of the most interesting ones to watch on the show. If you see season 1 how Nate keeps mentioning " I'm not gay" while Jules keep insisting that they met on a dating app for gays . He's actually a very complicated character which adds depth to the show. Also, the actor should get an Emmy . I've seen good acting after a long time .

I dont think he's gay per se. I think he knew she was on there thats why he was on the app only to catfish her. The thing is, and what most people don't know, is that "gay" apps usually always include others that are not exclusively gay, in this case, "trans" women. I know this because I am a "trans" woman, and I've used Grindr before, which is the most popular "gay" app there is, but there is actually not only gays (mostly, yes, not everyone though), but also bi, pan, or trans women and men categories, and because there are "trans" women in those apps, straight guys who don't know much about us but want to, join the app. I think that's what happened with Nate, ofc to get to know Jules, not because it is a "gay" dating app. Either way, he definitely is not gay.

We all know that Nate is not a good boy.) But it's so funny when many viewers often don't see Nate's motivation to give the CD to Jules and at the same time assume that he made copies of this CD with some villainous plans. The disc is a symbolic instrument of control, power and blackmail. For the entire second season, Maddy kept Nate in control with this video disc. Nate blackmailed Jules several times in the first season. But now he gives her this disc and gives her control saying that she can do with it what she wants. It's a sign of his feelings for her, that's all. P.s. And I would also like to add that in the scene with russian roulette, he also takes the heart-shaped pendant from Maddy, which he then gives to Cassie. Just like the disc is a symbol of his true feelings, the pendant is a symbol of false feelings.

Nate went through some internal transformation from how he was in the first season. He is much less cocky and less smug in the second season. Although of course many remember that before Jules he visited Maddie with a revolver, but this looks more like a temporary relapse than a trend. He was practically on the verge of telling Jules "I love you" but it is clear that these words would have been very difficult for him. He often said them to Maddie and Cassie and it was always a means of manipulation. It seems to me that he is afraid that if he says this really and truthfully to someone to whom he really has feelings, then he will lose control and power over the situation, and he cannot agree with this yet.

The way that I coped with my many emotional issues was to belittle and manipulate everyone around me. I loved to pain myself as an approachable and trustworthy person because I loved getting leverage over other people. And if my constant belittling of others and my manipulation and lies didn't work, I'd get violent. I was callous and uncaring to pretty much everyone around me. But, I did have some people I was close with and felt safe being vulnerable around. Those relationships were toxic because I had no other way to interact with others but eventually a friend convinced me to start going to therapy. I used to think I was irredeemable. Although superficially I didn't care about the harm I did I was fixated on some of the people I hurt and I convinced myself that I was the worst person to walk this Earth. Now, after a lot of work to change a lot about myself, I can't help but try to see the potential for good in others. The line "I was trying to protect someone who didn't deserve to be protected" is interesting because it seems he's talking about Cal, but he blackmailed Jules to protect himself (from getting charged with strangling Maddy). It shows that he, while still being a reprehensible, abusive douchebag, is starting to realize that he wasn't and never has been the protagonist he thought he was. He realizes that he didn't deserve to be protected. I don't think Nate should get a redemption arc per se, at least not in the traditional sense where everyone forgives him and he gets the girl and they're all besties, but it would be cool to see him grow and become a better person without the influence of his father, potentially culminating in him turning himself into the police and admitting that the person he imprisoned was in fact innocent (although idk if he'd do that because he still 100 percent believes that the guy raped Maddy, as that's what she told him). It will be interesting to sew what they do with him next season

Right. All this search for his sexuality in the fandom simply rests on the fact that Jules is a girl and she is even in Nate's secret fantasies a girl. There is literally no reason to believe that he is gay or bi. He is not attracted to men. But there needs to be a side note that Nate himself is most likely experiencing residual transphobia and may believe that his feelings for Jules make him not straight, or even better, make him a "pervert" like his father.
@soso-mx8nb

Not everyone views trans people the same way. There is a chance that part of the reason for Nate's attraction to Jules is because he still sees her as partially a male. Just because he says I fell in love with a girl doesn't mean Its impossible that Nate sees her that way because we have seen he's capable of lying. Being transgender is a complicated experience. You may identify as female or get hormone therapy but that does not mean that everyone will see you as one hundred percent female. It really isn't transphobic for people to understand that and think there is a possibility that Nate doesn't see her as fully female especially if so much of his story line alludes to him being gay or bisexual and he met her on Grindr.

TLDR:: everyone has their own opinion but i think nate genuinely has feelings for jules. he's young, so it's like an automatic love but it's really just interest. his dad fucked him up, and he never got help so he can't allow himself to actually be with someone whole heartedly. him and maddy were toxic for one another, so that's obviously not going to work. cassie has a need to be loved so he's not going to get anything from her because she literally said "do what you want with me" and he's like "ok. cool". he has never experienced a genuine intimate relationship, and the first person he encounters where there may be hope for something like that is with someone who he has been conditioned to think is a threat to his masculinity. and if he loses that then that means he will lose power and control. the scene of him and his father fighting, he looks in the mirror and instantly has a meltdown and his rage skyrockets? that's because he had no power or control. hes been barely hanging on by a thread since he found those damn tapes when he was child - losing power and control intensifies the nightmares of his father. it means he feels like the people his father illegally recorded. he doesn't LIKE power or control, he only tries to keep it because the moment he loses it then he will officially snap and THAT is what i'm afraid of. Here Nate basically tells her what she fantasized that he would tell her in the episode where she was clubbing in the city and hallucinates Nate telling her that he’s Tyler… I think, while many may think the Cassie relationship was shoehorned in, that it was actually to show that Nate was really trying to replace how he felt about Jules with Cassie, but ultimately couldn’t. I think we see that somewhat as well with Jules and Elliot (in her special episode she said she wasn’t sure when she’d stop being in love with Tyler) and there’s the whole Rue aspect with Elliot as well. tldr s3 is going to have them hookup, it doesn’t matter that Nate is a “bad guy” Sam Levinson wrote a super empathetic episode for CAL… Euphoria is about empathy. And with all the talk about being a “good person” in s2, I think that is where our core characters (Rue, Jules, and Nate) are headed.

As soon as Nate gives her the disk, Jules noticeably softens and becomes more calm. She talks about the knife to shame him, but she could not talk about the knife at all. In any case, Nate treated her very badly in the first season and she has reason to be worried. But that doesn't negate the fact that her feelings for Nate are ambiguous. She hides from everyone that she is still in love with him, but it is impossible to hide this from the audience.)

Nate has serious problems with self-reflection and evaluation of his behavior. And he certainly enjoys hurting other people. But it seems to me that this is already changing, although many do not want to notice this and, due to the inertia of the first season, consider him a villain and an absolute psycho. Many people say that Nate cannot get the redemption arc, but personally, it seems to me that his redemption arc (or better, the healing arc) began in the second episode of the second season when he was in the hospital. It was then that he thought about what kind of person he could become if time turned back. If he had never seen the videos of his father. It is not clear why immediate results are expected from him in this. From Rue, for example, no one expects this, although she is not as bad as Nate. He cannot become a good person so quickly if he was very bad, it takes time and effort. And given the nature of his injury, he does not have many people nearby who could and would like to help him. I think the scene with Maddy and russian roulette just demonstrates this. He spent most of the season trying to return the disc with Jules by completely different methods, but when the truth about him and Cassie was revealed, he had a relapse, since it was an extreme situation. And he certainly liked it, he even smiled thinking about it. But this does not mean that he is incorrigible in principle. The scene with Jules in the car just shows that he has a much more vulnerable side that he is ready to reveal to someone. This is the same "Tyler" that Jules always wanted to see in Nate. And at the end of the second season, he does something that Nate from the first would never have done. He turns his father in to the police and jeopardizes his family's reputation. He removes the external source of his trauma almost instinctively, but he definitely has a lot of inner work to do on himself.

People are talking about wether or not Nate’s a good guy or a bad guy because of this. He’s definitely a bad guy, but I think it’s kinda like Walter White at the end of breaking bad. Like by the end, he’s clearly a bad guy, but he does make right what he can. I don’t think this is an example of Nate being a hero or a villain. Let me share one theory. As many will remember, one of the main fantasies in this series was Jules' apartment in New York. This apartment, for example, is shown in special episodes. Rue's story in the first season about this apartment gives the deceptive impression that this dream was originally related to Rue. But in fact, this apartment was invented by Jules not at all for her and Ru, but for her and "Tyler". It was with him that Jules saw herself not just in a close relationship, but literally in a marriage relationship. But when Nate betrayed her trust at the lake, it was only then that Jules placed Rue in her mind as a friend in this apartment. This explains well why in the special episode "Tyler" still lives in this apartment, he lived there originally and does not want to move anywhere, because this is his apartment. Their apartment with Jules. In Season 2, this apartment becomes Elliot's house in almost every way except that Elliot is not "Tyler" but his replacement. But isn't Nate doing the same swapping in his head? It's all very funny.

@@jellie_ellie2387 Yes, I know that Sam is accused of being a bad and inconsistent screenwriter. He is also accused of allegedly spoiling the character of Jules in the second season and ruined the excellent lesbian relationship between Rue and Jules by putting a man between them. But what these people just don't understand is that there has always been a man between Rue and Jules since the beginning of the first season. Jules showed no romantic affection for Rue at that time. They don't understand the void Nate left in Jules' heart or deny it. Therefore, they cannot understand Jules' inner motive for her cheating with Elliot. It seems to them that Jules is simply looking for male attention from the first man she comes across, as she did before meeting "Tyler", but this is not so.

This scene is Nate attempting to exercise control over his life. It's one more blow to his family (particularly his dad) and he has mixed all of these feelings with the underlying obsession over Jules, which he low-key had from the very beginning. To him, realising and accepting his feelings for Jules, a person he would see as odd to be interested in, is something like a liberation from his macho persona mask. The irony is, his dad also had a similar tipping point when he decided to embrace his sexuality and leave his fake image behind, which came at the expense of his family and partners. Jules to Nate isn't a person he loves. At least not entirely. She mostly represents a need fulfilment, just like Maddy was his perfect choice of a perfect girl to compliment his macho image and Cassie is the best replacement for Maddy as someone who can easily be molded and controlled. Maybe he's more genuinely interested in Jules, but his issues and overall bad personality would mess everything up.

This season he wasn't violent at all with anyone, he is more mature, more sincere and he had the courage to confront his dad, what he did with the gun was horrible, agree, but that was just manipulacion, he pulled the trigger on his head, not her head, just to make her talk, because he saw she won't give up the tape when he first asked, she lied.. so he did that to make her talk, just for jules, it was for a good cause, he helped her, apologized to her and conffesed his love for her, not with those words exactly, and he seems more hurt and traumatized this season, and sad, he knows he did horrible things he admitted it, but at least he helped jules and got his dad in jail, meaning he is ready to leave that trauma behind, i am nost saying he is a saint for doing that, i am just saying in season 1 he only cared about himself and his dad and that changed in season 2, he is reedeamable, he already did the first step, it's not like he is the only horrible person/ abuser from euphoria, maddy is one too, and no one calls her out( she is violent asf), rue is an emocional abuser, cal is one, i really think he can change, it is hard because he feels love for jules but has no idea what love is, he discovers that with jules, snd he was honest with her, all season 2 they gave us hints, parralels, clues that she is the one he loves, the other girls are just for decoration, cause he wants to be eith hot girl, bio girls to manitain his image, suoer masculine, hot jock, but he loves jules and because she is trans, it is hard for him to accept it( but he did with her), because he doesn't want to be like his dad, he hates that idea but in the care when he hold her hand he was stuggling to find his words, he was like hey, ummm, and then it was so hard for him to tell her and accept that everything they talked was true, you can see on his face how hard it was for him to say that 😲❤️, so cute, and if the role were reversed and maddy was the one holding the gun at nate to get the tape he stole let's say and was gonna use.. everyone would say wow, girl power, he did it for jules, that was a good thing
