Hibiscus sabdariffa
Roselle
Another one of our favorite crops growing here at SandHill Farm is an edible hibiscus, the Hibiscus sabdariffa. It is recognized as Roselle, Jamaican Red Sorrel or "Hibiscus Tea".
Planted in the spring, it grows prolifically through Florida's hottest months. While the edible leaves offer a cranberry-like flavor when added to a salad or wrap, the real prize of this plant comes at the first sight of fall when it produces it's beautiful calyces. The Roselle calyx is extremely high in antioxidants & can be used to make the most delicious teas, jams, jellies, wine & syrup. The taste is so similar to cranberries, it was grown & used as a relish substitute on the table, alongside the Thanksgiving turkey by Floridians over 100 years ago.
We prefer to dry the Roselle calyces for storage reasons, but they can also be boiled fresh & made into countless recipes. We will be testing the seeds as a protein source for our chickens, after recently learning about their added purpose.
