After filming Pete's testimony the first time he realized he left a lot of his story out. Being on camera can be amnesia provoking! With that said, as Pete describes in the embedded video, he suffered from headaches, chronic bilateral shoulder pain, nausea, and neck pain. He recalls always feeling like his shoulders were up around his ears. Many people who have neck injuries have a facilitated ( overactive) nervous system which can lead to chronically tense muscles, which in Pete's case affected his neck and upper trapezius muscles. It is estimated that young kids have neck pain at a prevalence rate of 30 percent , while adults have a prevalence rate of 50 percent. (1)Chronic neck pain is an epidemic in this country and unfortunately the large majority who suffer resort to painkilling medications. In 2017 there were 191 million prescriptions written for painkilling medication.(2)
Pain killers can give relief but long term use can toxify the liver, lead to stomach ulcers, and should never be a long term health care choice. Many yeah ago we did a survey in our office and the top benefit that patients received after being under care was pain reduction. In this article, we would like to discuss a natural health care discipline called the Blair Upper Cervical Technique whose objective is to remove barriers that are preventing the body from functioning normally and healing itself.
How Can Upper Cervical Misalignment be at the Root of Neck And Shoulder Pain?
The cervical spine is the most unstable region of the spinal column. This results from the head weighing 10-12 pounds and it resting on a two-ounce bone that sits on top of the neck. The head-neck junction is held together by muscles, ligaments, and soft tissue. As a consequence, the upper cervical spine is vulnerable to spinal misalignment that results from whiplash-type injuries.
Acceleration deceleration injuries tear the soft tissue that supports the normal biomechanical motion of the neck. Each joint in the neck has a fibrous ligament that surrounds it, called a joint capsule. The joint capsules job is to stabilize a joint so it moves within its normal range of motion. When it is damaged a cascade of musculoskeletal and neurophysiological changes occur. When the supporting soft tissue is damaged the joint misaligned, the muscles splint(spasm), and the joint loses normal motion. Once this occurs a chain reaction of postural adaptation takes place throughout the entire spine. As a consequence neck pain, loss of cervical spine range of motion, mid back pain, upper trapezius pain, and low back pain may follow as the spine adapts to the injury.
Once the spinal muscle tone becomes imbalanced, abnormal input from the proprioception (information from sensors in the joints) fires back into the central nervous system and can affect almost any neuro pathway in the body leading to a host of health issues. The top two bones in the neck have the greatest number of proprioceptive nerve endings in their joints compared to any other joint in the body. As a consequence, injury to the neck can have far-reaching effects throughout the body an central nervous system. By restoring normal motion to these misaligned vertebrae normal physiology can be restored and this explains the types of recoveries that patients like Pete and others experience while under Blair Upper Cervical Corrective care.
What Exactly Does a Blair Upper Cervical Doctor Do?
Blair Upper Cervical doctors are specially trained to locate spinal misalignments in the upper cervical spine and correct them. Spinal misalignment is located by running a battery of neurological tests that locate the spinal segments that have been injured and misaligned by a prior neck injury.
Once located, precision imaging in the form of digital x-ray or cone-beam computed tomography (Cbct) is used to precisely determine which joint has misaligned and the angulation of the misaligned joint. Each person’s anatomy is different and therefore imaging is used to uncover the blueprint to be used to correct each patient’s individual misalignment pattern.
Once this information is gleaned, a gentle, light correction is made without twisting, popping, or pulling. The patient is then monitored over time to ensure that the correction is holding. If the testing indicates the need for another correction, then it is performed. However, the goal of Blair Upper Cervical Care is for the patient to stay in “adjustment”.
It isn’t the correction that produces healing. It is the removal of nerve irritation and the adjustment “holding” in its normal position that allows the body to function better and proceed through a healing process. This is how Blair Chiropractic treatment can help patients who suffer from a host of health complaints just like Pete!
