You just blew my mind, i'll have to start setting up something like this. Amazing idea.

Great Tip and very useful not only for Nepenthes but other plants as well, I use a smaller version when away on holiday for some house plants. Thanks for sharing.

Since the trays you use are out of stock, I use heavy duty 1020 trays, and egg crate louver placed on top of pvc pipe cut to size to hold the louver up in the 1020 tray. I cut the mat to fit and tuck it in. Saves me a lot of time on watering too. Thanks for the idea.

Using PVC pipe to hold up the louver is a really smart idea!

Looks like you have a well thought out and successful growing system, spotted a misting system in there I think. Inspiring. I'm just now looking at ways of adding a capillary mat to my Restrepia and Nepenthes collection as they dry out too fast, yours is a design worth trying. Thanks

If you want to try it out without committing to a huge system, you can try one of these kits: www.gardeners.com/buy/capillary-matting-seedling-tray-7-qt/8609872.html

I've just used similar on my greenhouse benches, without the under water catching system. Just the capillary matting to put my various sized nepenthes etc onto it whilst on holiday. Not sure if keep pot's on forever or just redoing when going on holiday over 2wks? As thought nepenthes not like sitting in water constantly?? 🤔

I love this idea and method. What are the double head, small black plastic things you have clipped to the middle and bottom shelves facing the plants? They look like they may be misters?

Yep, they're misters but I don't use them anymore

@@pings_n_things ah, thanks for the response. Those are pretty neat. I'll keep them in mind for the future when I may need something similar outdoors. I appreciate you giving us a video on something new we probably haven't thought of before. It's truly educational.

Thanks for making this tutorial! I saw your system in another video of yours and loved it. Where do you buy the small grow bags from? I had no idea grow bags came in such sizes and I think they're adorable!

I get my grow bags from 247garden.com and greenhousemegastore.com Be aware that roots can easily grow into the felt of grow bags, making repotting quite difficult. Most Neps hate having their roots disturbed. That's why I'm actually moving away from grow bags and switching everything over to net pots.

I remember a comment in a video where you spoke about switching to coco husk chips. Do you think this will still work with that medium? I'd imagine it wouldn't work as well.

Great video. You're first video got me thinking I should recreate your system for my cephs and I was wondering which capillary mat you were using. I noticed that the felt mat linked is comprised of wool. Any concerns over its use vs. something inert over the long term? Did you test the water for any residual tds from its use?

The TDS may increase slightly on the first use, but it seems to decrease over time while never raising to a very high level. You could give the mat a good rinse before first use if TDS is a concern. Alternatively, I also use this mat on my very bottom rack: a.co/d/47QzERN It's made from synthetic fibers, but in my experience it is really difficult to rehydrate once it's dried out.

if I calculate things right, you have $20 tray, $45 in standoffs and $20 in felt per tray. Pretty expensive. Wonder if the PVC and eggcrate plus felt like @tattooedchick24 does is a better value for half the cost of what's in each tray. Ideas ?
@pings_n_things

Yeah that's about right. You can buy the trays and felt in bulk to save a bit of $. Eggcrate diffuser and PVC standoffs would be a good budget alt

aren't you worried that their roots will grow into the felt?
@pings_n_things
2 жыл бұрын
That's definitely a concern. I've only found it to be an issue with plants that have outgrown their pots anyways. Over-potting and picking up the pots periodically helps too. I'm always moving plants around so it hasn't been an issue for me.
