Its so hard not to overbuy food, especially if you have a past of food insecurity. I had food insecurity as a child, and its almost like a healing thing for me to have a stocked pantry for us and for any guests who ever need anything. I try to create zones for similar items, like pasta sauces and salsa in one area, etc. I also try to watch what i buy at Costco. We only shop there about once a month, and i try hard not to buy too many pantry type items there because it's hard for us to get through it all.

I relate so much to this comment. We didn’t have alot of food when I was a kid & I remember nights going to bed with no dinner & hungry. I have rice, pasta, dried beans, canned tomatoes, sauces, etc. I like having stuff on hand when cooking & like sharing my food friends & family since it is just me & my husband.

Me too, we barely had enough food for all of us and I was always fed but I was always hungrier than I let on, now we always have a fully stocked fridge and pantry because I never want my kids to feel like that, but also we’re financially stable when my mum was a single mum and struggled a lot

Easiest/cheapest way to add shelves is getting plywood boards cut to size at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Clear coat poly for protection. And put them right on top of the wire rack. You can nail a small plywood board into the front to conceal the lip of the wire shelf.

I know you asked about shelving options, but something that really worked for my roommate and I was an over the door shoe organizer! Our pantry was really small and we had a hard time keeping track of our food products because of how cramped the space was. The organizer freed up a lot of room on the shelves, and allowed us to utilize vertical space! All of the pockets were perfect for our various fruit snacks and granola bars, and it made them easier to grab and go when we were busy in the mornings.

Ignore them if they have a problem with it. But, just go for it! Have fun with choosing a picture.

Everyone loves how I organize my pantry: First tip: categorize It’s nice if you can and want to get the storage containers for things but it’s not always realistic for everyone. DO NOT let that stop you. Have a section of your shelf devoted to just snacks… if bags of chips or nuts are in their original packaging, maybe get a bin or decorate a box w a label on it just to help keep them separate from other items. Have a section just for things you need for making lunches, like peanut butter, canned fruits, canned meats, etc. A food prep section is great (as in pastas, sauces, etc) And then I also have a section for backstock of our often used staples (like challula and pickles lol) Second tip: go through your pantry quarterly. Even if you can only tackle one shelf at a time, do it. Personally, I look at my items that are about to expire 3-6 months down the road and decide if I will use it immediately or I donate it. I also shop my pantry every time there is a food drive so it helps me keep track of what I have as well.

I have the same wire racks and they are a pain. I'd absolutely love pull-out shelves someday. If you don’t own your house, you can use plywood and some vinyl to make the shelves look better😊 just cut the plywood to cover the top of the shelf (the area you will put all your stuff on) and a piece to cover the front part of the shelf (the part you see from the front the most when your pantry is full). Connect those two pieces and cover with a vinyl of your choosing for a final aesthetic look, when they lay on top of the shelves they will look like floating shelves but still be rented friendly if you need to remove them😎💕 Edit: even if you do own your home, this could also be much more affordable and easier for you to complete then stripping everything out

You could try the easy floating shelves! You just screw up 1×2's to create like a frame for the shelf and then just a piece of wood on top and then you'll cover the gap on the bottom with another piece of wood. Plywood is cheap and if you paint it you could easily save money and no one would ever know!!

I saw someone make suuuper simple “floating” wood shelves to go over the wire racks. Instantly aesthetically gorgeous AND no ripping out what’s already there (so it’s much easier. It was basically just a stained (or painted) wooden shelf with a lip on the front to cover the front of the wire. It’s so simple! Home Depot and Lowe’s will even cut the wood for you, so all you have to do is screw, glue, or otherwise affix the lip and lay it on the wire. Bam!

I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but if you don’t want to start over and build shelves, you can buy some simple thin plywood, cut it to the size of your current wire shelves, prime paint and finish them and just slide them over the metal racks you use now. I did this for a metal shelving unit that I use for extra storage. No need to secure them, with the weight of the wood, even with thin plywood it will not slide. Gives a nice finished effect without a lot of effort, time and money!
