1985. I was 5 years old. I grew up in suburban Dallas and California (my parents were divorced), but my dad went on a business trip to NYC at some point in that year and heard about the NES from a colleague. He worked in environmental engineering, so I'm guessing it was a "check out this cool thing I'm getting my kid for Christmas" sort of conversation. So I was very fortunate and received the control set with ROB for Christmas that year. Duck Hunt and Gyromite were packed in. I got SMB for a birthday or Christmas the next year, I don't remember.

We got Tetris, SMB2, Friday the 13th, Jaws, and I don't remember what the fifth one was. I also remember the one time my grandparents bought me an NES game and it was Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. In the 90s we had to downsize quite a bit due to finances so we'd typically get one Game Boy game or a used NES or SNES title. Still, the thought is what mattered.

Maybe the games were three, but if it's true the third surely have been very forgettable because i distinctly remember those two games: each one of them have been putted on a shelf on two separated random days during December when I was coming back from school during December, a sort of "advent for the Game Boy": when I saw the first Indy game I said "Woah, that means that I wil surely get a Game Boy for Christmas". For a young kid who was living into a family with very moderate financies (before that day my main console was the 2600 and my portable games were Tiger LCD games), that was the best waiting ever.

It would be interesting to find out what the most gifted NES game was. I'm guessing it was either Super Mario Bros. 3 or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I don't think it was Tetris because 1. It was already bundled with the Gameboy and 2. It's not something every kid would ask for. 88-90 was NES in its prime and that was right at the height of turtle mania and mario madness. You can go to any retro gamestore in the US and you are pretty much guaranteed to find either of those games.
