I take pictures with my phone and edit circles and text overlay on the photo. I also write the size so I know what tool to use. You could also rename the photos to keep in order and correspond to the fasteners. It goes quicker as you get used to doing it. Also allows for getting the best picture and zooming in. Bonus, later you could print or pdf a manual for that specific vehicle.

I'm glad that you showed your approach to documenting the tear down, labeling and bagging the various interior pieces. It seems like a wise investment in time, that should pay off well later making it easier to reassemble, without having to trust your memory for countless details.

When I was a new tech I did all sorts of things to track fasteners. Pictures. Bags. Cups. As a master tech I've learned pretty much every bolt is the same and it doesn't really matter where they go back for 90% of fasteners Also im voting to keep the factory differential

Personally i would use the proven drive trane and adapt a motor to that. Jeep/chrysler know what there doing as far ad drive tranes. This also lets the customer decide if they want 2 or 4 wheel drive as well as low and hi ranges. Just my thoughts. Keep up the good work.

I think we have an improvement on your idea. When we put stuff in a bag we label it with a few things. One is the description, but also a timestamp and the wrench size for the bolts (helps speed things up). Then, with the timestamp we can go through our photo reel and find the exact pictures around that time to see the connectors, wires, placements, etc. keeps everything digital and easy to find with a single timestamp.

Hey, thoughts about motor placement. 3 options. A. Two motors, parallel the axles. B. One motor driving the input to transfer case, replacing the transmission position. C. Positioned in the tunnel, potting power directly into the driveshaft. This has the most unknowns, specifically, back-driving the front differential. The loads on the thrust bearings would be reversed, and they may not be sized for the higher speeds/loads in that case. The same can be said about the bevel gear, especially if they aren’t straight cut. Good luck!!

For the center motor make sure you can get your hands on the gear reduction units they make. They’re about 2k for the set but it’s essential for this type of application.

In my own thoughts, twin center motors will offer you a more "off-road" trpe arrangement, as the set up Jeep uses on those is very good for that usage. If you are making a pavement only (or even a 80/20 road/gravel) arrangement, I think you would be better adapting the Tesla subframe in the rear mounted as to give you the proper ride height. Maybe eve a 1 or 2" spacer on top of the rear strut to increase ride height. Same goes for the front. To me, you could then armour up a few Tesla cells to sit under the chassis skateboard style and have your low voltage and high voltage under hood, and smaller battery pack where your fuel tank resides now.

Motor Mounting Option: Why not keep the Transfer Case in the driveline? I would reduce the motor count to 1 and keep the original drive shafts? This also eliminates any further complications with the axles/differential/suspension/alignment. Yes you'll incur slightly more mechanical loss/efficiency and keep one more thing to change the oil in BUT it keeps the original functionality of the vehicle. This is coming from someone with a '97 Wrangler and a '12 Grand Cherokee.

Not sure that film is a cost effective approach these days… but it’s a great idea. I use cardboard and draw a picture of the shape and push the bolts thru in the area they came from… Or toss em all on a mag tray… Sometimes I’m better about it than others

Hard to believe the work it took to take all these interior pieces out. Makes you wonder about the effort/cost to assemble this vehicle. The giant bar behind the dash seems structural or is otherwise overkill. Being super picky, I don't like to see so many single use ziplock bags. Probably the least of your concerns but if you wrote the numbers on the pictures, you could just reuse them (or use more permanent containers). Awesome video as always.

If your customer just wants it for daily driving and occasional light trail use, I would imagine keeping the transfer case as the best option. I have a similar size/ weight SUV I would love to convert (probably never will have the funds though) my idea is to mount two motors roughly where the transmission used to be, and have one drive the rear wheels, and one drive the front wheels. I feel it will also make the high voltage wiring easier to have the drive selector right next to the motors, but I could be wrong. I am also most likely not going to be able to get a tesla motor for this project. I like the new electric motor KIA recently produced for their SUV.

This is where I am going with my project. I will be keeping the generator where I can swap it out later when the battery technology gets better and or cheaper. I will still need a few batteries for the regen brakes, but most of the power consumed will be coming from the generator. I am hoping to use a smaller motor for a generator as well.

One photo should zoom in with the details and another photo should show the same location, but zoomed out. Disclaimer:It all went back together and is running. On my last engine project I took many digital photos. The problem I created was zooming in on exact location of fasteners without providing a zoom out photo giving the relative position within the engine block. Same with electrical connectors.

I applaud your new fastener organization method. However, it occurs to me that using Polaroid will get quite expensive, and it is *your* income which will suffer. Could you instead use some digital media for storage and then print out a "tag" to put in the baggie. You might try video with a small pointer and voice annotation. You could clip out one frame for baggie ID purposes. The downside of stills from digital capture is that you would have to stop work to annotate with arrows. Your idea of numbering to preserve order of remove/install is great, too!

The transfer case is what switches it from 4wheel to two wheel. I would put the motor in the front (ish) and connect it to the transfer case just like the gas one, and then let the stock transfer case do the switching from 2 wheel to 4 wheel. This will be especially good if you keep the stock transmission as the gear ratio for uphill climbs and crawling will be the same.
