Sea Shepherd is back defending the Mediterranean unveiling a new boat, the “CONRAD”, dedicated to the Mare Nostrum.
With “Operation SISO”, Sea Shepherd protects the Italian waters thanks to the close cooperation with the Authorities, Capitaneria di Porto (Harbour Office) and the Guardia di Finanza Reparto Operativo Aeronavale (Financial Police Department for Air-Naval Operations). On the bridge, in addition to the Campaign Leader Andrea Morello, there will be the former Chief of Staff of the Navy Admiral Giuseppe de Giorgi who, after being captain on the M/V Ocean Warrior, returns to the Neptune Fleet in defense of the Sea.
Jane Patterson and Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni - the latter is member of the Global and US Board of Advisors and Sea Shepherd Italia’s Council of the Wise- donated the new boat "Conrad". It is a 17m power catamaran ready to document and, when necessary, intervene and stop illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in consultation with the authorities.
Thanks to the continuous support of the Smile Wave, combined this year with an important donation from Italian Buddhist Union (UBI), Aeolian Islands Preservation Fund and the Iris Ceramica Group Foundation, Sea Shepherd is once again fighting against IUU fishing in the Aeolian archipelago.
We are proud to present the new Sea Shepherd vessel: CONRAD. Launched at the beginning of August, it is a 17-meter catamaran, capable of hosting up to fourteen crew members (eleven during the current emergency status) and equipped with an outboard inflatable raft with rigid keel. We have the most powerful weapon on board: our cameras, including a high-tech thermal camera. These cameras will light up the eyes of the world to fight all together the countless crimes that still afflict our Sea, and bring the eyes of justice where it still can’t reach. The fast vessel Hunter will support the Conrad for the entire duration of Operation Siso.
“The extensive collaboration with the Italian Authorities offers a unique and extraordinary opportunity to protect our seas, combining the enthusiasm of the precious Sea Shepherd volunteers with the professionalism and courage of the Law Enforcement. The protection of all species threatened by the various forms of illegal fishing is urgent and indispensable."
Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni
"It is a great honor for me to be able to return to defend our Mediterranean Sea with a new boat donated by Jane Patterson and Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, a true enlightened entrepreneur and a person who taught me that dreams can come true, by believing in them and committing oneself without compromises. From today, another bow will sail the sea waving the Jolly Roger, armed with passion and determination at the disposal of Dolphins, Turtles, Sharks, Sperm Whales and every inhabitant of the Sea, in its defense and conservation. Thanks Jane and Sebastiano, thanks dear friends, our hearts will be forever grateful to you. Bow to the Sea! "
Andrea Morello
Why the name Operation SISO?
Siso was a young Sperm Whale, who died in 2017 after being entangled in an illegal "spadara" type net during the passage through the Aeolian Islands. The heroic attempt to free him took the Coast Guard many hours, but it was not possible to save him eventually.
SISO was found lifeless along the coast of Capo Milazzo by the biologist Carmelo Isgrò, who preserved the skeleton, the net that killed him and the plastic extracted from his stomach, as a warning for future generations. Operation SISO owes its name to the nickname of the friend who had helped the biologist Isgrò in the recovery of the Sperm Whale and who died in a car accident in the following days.
