I've recently gotten this locomotive from Hattons and have personally loved it! Mine looks to be of a much higher quality... maybe some sort of retool. Really appreciate your comments and reviews. 60 odd years ago, I took up railway modelling which has given me endless pleasure over the years. What disappoints me is the continual level of indifferent quality of rolling stock. Surely it is not much to expect faultless running after all manufacturers have had enough time to fine tune mechanisms and to still encounter goods wagons and coaches of different manufacture failing to couple because of differing heightis is inexcusable. It seems that not all manufacturers of British outline models adopt the recommended standards for the hobby which defeats the whole object of the exercise. I can't help thinking that the NMRA has a more stringent approach and the main manufacturers make some of the sweetest running loco I know. Nevertheless, keep up the good work Sam. Best wishes

From watching this it looks like the running plate is sagging at the rear. The cab and bunker appear not to be perpendicular to the rail. Dear @sam, as always, thank you for helping the hobby. On another note, I completely and utterly agree with your comments. We (as modelers) cannot keep buying trains (since it's our hobby) and keep jumping from one brand to the next trying to find a decent locomotive (or rolling stock to that matter). It's hard enough to fund the purchase and harder still to find split chassis (to name a few of the failures...) in 2020. I have not had in my collection a split chassis since my Bachmann Consolidation gave up on me, which my father bought when I was a baby back in the 80's. I do not think that the EFE initiative might be bad by itself, but if the do not consider improving the quality they will lose clients 1 by 1. Keep well! D.

Only default this engine have not : square wheels. Everything else is a Chernobyl-like disaster, to remain polite. The GBP 18 Smokey Joe is better to this one in every point of view. Hornby manufactures Railroad locomotives that looks far more better than this one. Bachmann/EFE had put the bar of the standard for naff models ten notches higher, they only have Heljan as a competitor on the marketplace for this kind of pieces of kraft blatantly overpriced. If you PAY me GBP 118/132 €, I would accept to run one, I'm short of Southern small tender engines. And at last what is the motivation to put a spare part for a traditional chinese sailing boat like a coreless motor in this one ? On N scale models, you have a motor that heats less and have a better yield, you can easily imagine the up side of such a choice, like putting a more powerfull motor in a smaller space. But for OO ? And, especially if you kill it with a laughable drivetrain : split chassis, the return, hurrah... One explanation I can put forward to the attitude of Bachmann might be the policy they have to select their managers. I had seen a video on the differences between japanese and american automobile industry before coming here, and I have learn something interesting. CEO of Honda and Toyota, the main japanese car manufacturers, are always former engineers and they apply the concept of kaizen, which can be translated by "continuous improvement". Those people looks for the best quality at the best price for their products, and carefully looks at the customer's demand to do so. In the USA, CEO of Ford, Chrysler and GM are financial experts who are just looking for best profit possible and reducing cost anyhow. That is why american cars are now daft products. I think the CEO of Bachmann might be a financial expert, and not an engineer, that might explain why the prices skyrockets and the quality goes down.

I'm surprised by this review, Sam. I have two of these locos, pre-oredered from the original batch, and they are both excellent performers. They run smoothly and faultlessly despite their tiny wheelbase on my electrofrog points and they respond perfectly to my ProCab controller. I have also seen several running perfectly at exhibitions (Remeber when we had those?). Unless Kernow or Bachmann have changed the specs from the original, I suspect you have a duff one that should have gone straight back where it came from. You still have time - see below. My models cost £99.99 new, which was fairly expensive even then but the Beatties were Kernow's first venture and they would not have expected massive sales. In line with general Chinese loco inflation, the current price is probably what one would expect although I'm sure that whatever deal Kernow have struck with Bachmann, the latter will have asked for a healthy premium for their services. I think this might have been the smallest model of a prototype steam engine that had been attempted at the time of it's release so some mistakes were probably inevitable. It is particularly lightweight, I suspect, because space that could have been used for extra weight was kept available for speakers. Surely a stay alive capacitor would help here, although th engine was roundly praised in all the hobby mags, especially for it's pickups. Mine will pull six or seven wagons and a brake or a Hornby Maunsell 2-set, which is all I want them to do. Remember how old the protoype was and what duties they undertook in real life, especially during their 60 years at Wadebridge, and they really are out of place doing anything more. Even in their previous life as London subarban power, they were only hauling rakes of lightweight wooden four wheelers (Imagine spending a 12-hour or more shift in that tiny cab.). There is room for a tiny bit of flattened lead under the cab roof - every little helps. Standards and expectations, of course, have been raised in the last 10 and more years but I agree that the loco is not as good as it might have been. However, there were a number of locos from the first decade of 2021 that were less than perfect, not the least of which were Hornby's dreadful T9 where the motors were glued in place and the Mazak parts cracked, rendering them useless. The 0 298 body could have been better, especially the rather gross safety valves and I don't think DJM quite got the shape of the Drummond dome right. However, modellers have always tried to improve on what they have and once the only option for many, many classes was to buy an expensive, limited release whitemetal kit and spend ages buying extras (Often this included wheels and chassis!!) and modifying or replacing less than perfect parts as you went along. Proportionately I suspect these whitemetal locos, especially big ones, cost much more in real terms than today's RTR offerings. Surely it's an easy enough job on the 0298to remove the plastic originals and replace them in brass. Re the continuation of the splasher curve across the inside of the cab, was this something to do with mechanism clearance issues, or perhaps production problems. Anyway, it can be disguised with a couple of crew members. Whilst it has it's imperfections, I'm not sure it's entirely fair to downgrade the whole product when your review model was obviously a faulty one. Personally I don't think modellers make enough use of the Sale of Goods Act or it's successor, the exact name of which escapes me. This states that any goods offered for sale, online or otherwise, should be of merchandiseable quality and fit for purpose and that it is the retailers responsibilty to ensure this is so. A model railway engine that does not run properly (and that includes Bachmann's speciality, wobbly wheels.), or fails after a few months with broken wires or faulty brushes, should be returned to the seller under these provisions. If the retailer refuses to co-operate, get Trading Standards involved. As a footnote I would also add that I have two of the DJM /Kernow mainland 02 0-4-4Ts and lessons were obviously learned. These are absolutely beautiful model engines in every respect.

Fantastic review as always Sam. Genuinely gutted to see what is such a lovely loco' not given the manufacturing effort it deserves, certainly at this price point anyway. From a distance I think this is one of the most charismatic engines I've ever seen you review and if it had as much diecast, fine detailing and performance as a Hornby Peckett I would certainly have bought one; it was great you ran a Peckett alongside it as they are a great yardstick of what can be achieved with a small loco' for around, but often much less than, £100. With over 90k subscribers I'm sure manufacturers must be taking note of your videos too so thanks again for your balanced/thorough reviews.

Just did a bit of research on the LSWR 0298 Class "Beattie Well Tanks" and I think the EFE model seems to be more in line with the real locomotives. Like, they would have been powerful in 1863 but by the 1910s, they were extremely weak than other tank engines of the same time. Their BR power rating is 0P and not to forget when the last one was retired from service (on china clay duties) in 1962, the class was 99 years old! So, being made of plastic was a move to try and replicate how the real locomotives were showing their age.

Out of curiosity I did some research on this model and found out that DJM is not responsible for this monstrosity, but rather, it’s Dapol, who made it in association with Kernow Model Rail Center. Crazy to think that this is what they were producing around 10 years ago, as now their making some of the best models on the market. As harsh as we were on Dapol for their terriers, they really were an improvement over this. This version here that is sold under the EFE brand was made in association with Kernow and not Dapol, as they bought the tooling and had Bachmann put it in their EFE brand so that it could be sold to a larger market. Strange that this wasn’t by DJM though, as the plastic like nature as well as the mechanism is very similar to what DJM used.

When entering the cab you do have to climb up and over the wheel splahser inside the cab but no it doesn't run up to the firebox. The crew stand in a well between both wheels; the volute springs for the driving wheels are also in the cab and the weels are totally unguarded from inside the cab. Another error I've noticed in the model is that the tank filler, which is in the coal bunker, isn't modelled! Not sure how EFE Rail think you put water into one of these, but having fired one of these engines, the tank filler is in the bunker at the back.

The first class of steam locos in Melbourne from 1854 were 2-4-0WTs well tanks, but from Robert Stephenson's in Newcastle. For the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay railway. Later became the Victorian Railways N class for suburban services. If these eventually are.more realistically priced then they may form the basis of conversion. One of the main Bachmann outlets in Melbourne is located within about 25 metres from where these first trains ran in 1854, being under Flinders Street station.

By far my best runner is the Rovex Princess i've mentioned previously. The body was warped to such degrees I had to hacksaw the cab off, cut it into pieces, then file, glue, and fill to get it vaguely the right shape. Hello Sam, another interesting review, think it was a Dave Jones creation ( need I say more ) commissioned by Kernow, having seen your review don't know why they approved it as it is and not good for their image and if could find out original selling price would probably be nearer to £100 than the new EFE price. Regarding Bachmann I don't understand them using the EFE branding for models that I don't regard as first editions when they been previously produced and sold as another company product such as Kernow, and Bachmann have increased the prices for models like you have reviewed that are not good value for the selling price, they look nice as a static model on the shelf which is not why you would be buying them.

Its all very simple. Kernow have ordered some more Well tanks but so they can get them into model shops around the country and not just their premiss in Cornwall / Guildford then they have done a deal with Bachmann to distribute them more widely. As Kernow still retain all the intellectual property / design rights, Bachmann cannot market the Well tanks under the Bachmann brand so created the EFE brand as an alternative. The same has occurred with the Hymek / class 35 - it all the design / intellectual property etc remains under the ownership of Hejan - all EFE / Bachmann are doing is distributing a fresh batch of models on Heljans behalf.

I can easily see why the detail section is also labelled as moaning. Pseudo-joking aside, this Well Tank reminds of a time when I too spent far too much money on a model. I was in a shop in Christchurch (New Zealand) and found a Lancashire and Yorkshire 2-4-2 tank for the equivalent of 120 pounds. The level of detail on that engine doesn't even have a chance of justifying the price. For comparison's sake, more recently I bought a Hornby Crosti-boiler 9F - a big 2-10-0 - at a shop in Auckland. Granted this is meant to be a Railroad range model, but she's still so much better than the L&YR tank. The 9F was the equivalent of 100 pounds instead of 120, and is so much bigger than the 2-4-2 tank.
