It was great to see someone show the capabilities and short comings in a fair and honest demonstration.

I too dismissed it initially, but I kept seeing them in the shop and liked them more in real life than in photographs. I ended up taking one for a half hour test ride. The handling is surprisingly intuitive, and the bike feels very stable through corner transitions. The engine is pretty responsive and the gearbox is sweet and very positive. I didn’t get to take it on any dirt roads but I reckon it would work well. Anything up to 120km/hr and this bike is sweet. I think it would make a great commuter and weekend explorer, especially in Australia where our rural roads can just transition from bitumen to dirt and back rather suddenly.

That's what you're really buying with the CL vs Rebel500. Seat and foot control posture. I'm glad they offer this as the Rebel is uncomfortable for me...and my current CB has 58000 miles on it, so I expect a forced retirement any day now....and have to buy another bike. One more layer of closed cell foam atop that seat and the CL500 fits me like a 70s CB 750. I couldn't change the Rebel to fit. So for Honda it is CBX or CL500 for me, but there are other brand options too.

Honda just did fantastic job with that 471cc engine. Five models: F, X, R, Rebel, Scrambler. Covering pretty much all categories. Light enough to carry on hitch carrier of full size truck when going on vacation, powered enough to tour on 2000 miles trip and economical to be daily commuter. Kids: CLs have always been refit CBs, so this is consistent for Honda. The XLs were streetified Honda dirt bikes. I started on a 1971 CL and moved to a CB. For my light trail use, both bikes behaved the same with hybrid tires. The upswept tailpipe allows you to jump things, but the suspension really doesn't unless you like banging really hard bottoming out the rear shocks. So a good bike for 85% highway and 15% maintained forestry roads with some small creek and bog crossings. The rebel 500 is really more of a Honda CB than the CBX is. Cosmetics to look like a cruiser. I live on a very steep gravel forestry road with an old 1980s CB with street tires, so I go offroad every day leaving and coming home, and there's a creek crossing....so ANY bike can really do that, even with low pipes. I would call those water nervous flankings, not water crossings. Go through the middle after lining up and be done with it.

And the price of this one is tempting. The new Triumph (400X) looks better in pictures but the price here (Sweden) is not yet confirmed for that one. I´ve always been a bit of a fanboy of Honda as a brand, they make reliable bikes and I´ve owned a few over the years. I ride a Kawa Vulcan now, and have been for a long time and it has been bomb proof all the time that I´ve owned it. You’re welcome. Between this and the CB500X I’d still go for the X as it has better weather protection. In our northers climates that fairing gives you an extra month of riding.

My Honda trail 125 ABS will shut off when the rear wheel spins a lot versus the front. This happens to me when I go through mud puddles and get stuck in spin the rear trying to get out. I noticed the ABS starts flashing. It’s probably just the Budget ABS gets overwhelmed with the difference in speed when the bike is stopped.

By the way, I am a long term motorcyclist now in my 60s. Many bikes in the garage. I really like your reviews and watch them even if the bike isn’t something I’d be interested in. Great job making them enjoyable so scrip and post production is really commendable. Thanks

I wonder with a full exhaust and intake/higher flow filter and a flash tube if you picked up 2-5hp that would be a pretty big deal when you compare based on percentage increase

I would not have done those water crossings. Those are a one way in deal... no way out lol. All your tred quickly gets filled with mud and then you have nothing but slicks for wheels trying to get out of two potholes with mud all clumped up in your boots and all over you. Not going to do that with an old bike, and definitely not a new one. Mud and muddy water = rust and friction wear on parts. Great review, and love to have an SCL500, but not for 7 grand. Maybe used in 10 years... or something already depreciated

Huge muffler looks very wrong. I don't see why Honda needs the CL500 and CB500X in their line up. I would choose the X over the CL any day regardless of price difference. I am looking forward to the Triumph 400 scrambler. There's something about a single cylinder that just fits better with the concept of a scrambler, being lighter is a big deal.

Yes Like you I thought all design no substance so I went to see it at the dealership. I was offered to take it for a test ride but when I sat on it with my girlfriend, yes I need a small bike we can ride 2 up, it was uncomfortable for both of us. I did not take it for a test. I already have tried and liked the power train in the CB500X but that bike is too heavy for my needs. This bike is light enough but mainly due to a smaller gas tank, and with that very uncomfortable seat and high exhaust pipe that would be sitting right under my girlfriends leg I just don't see it as being the right choice for us.

Excellent bike review, tutorial, and terrain test. Best off road footage yet on the CL. I own a 21 CB500X and had pondered trading it for the new CL due to me being short and just using the bike for local country back roads. My main gripes with my CB500X are snatchy 1st gear throttle response, buzzy sustained vibes from 55mph up, and seat height. I have quelled the vibes with Grip Puppies and handlebar weights. A Corbin seat also helped slightly with the felt vibes in the butt. My quadry is not knowing if the CL is leaps and bounds better in these 3 areas? We are not allowed to take test rides where I live. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I love my CB500X but we all like an upgrade, but this could or could not be that for swapping these two models.

I’ve only ridden the CB500X on pavement but it does have superior weather protection so if cold weather is an issue it’s better than the CL. The CL feels more nimble in the twisties though and the seat is lower. If you got your CB lowered I’d keep it. Great bike.

Is the Honda CL500 Scrambler a good motorcycle? At a retail price in Canada of $9100 that question is largely academic.

I hate the gas tank on all of these Honda 500’s they should come over the frame rails as the rails are really ugly. Back in the-late 60’s and early 70’s scramblers actually made sense, not so mush anymore. There are so many off road machines that can do pavement nearly as well as dirt and that kind of makes these modern scramblers irrelevant

Yes, scramblers these days are mostly stylish road machines. Still fun to see how you can push them though. Personally I like ADV bikes best.

I do like both the CL500, and Scram 411, but if the Benelli Leoncino 500 Trail was available in Canada, I would choose it. In the meantime, I can't afford a new bike, so I will stick to my 2014 CB500X.

In all its infinite wisdom, Honda continues to market steaming dogpoo as "off-road" while still having the ability to manufacture the XR400. But they won't sell you the XR400 in North America anymore, because.....reasons.

Heyy ! Do you think compared to the rebel 500 the acceleration is as smooth ? Im a newbie and did all my lessons on a rebel 500 and cb 500 and prefered so much the rebel because it feels less nervous and smoother to accelerate, i was uncomfortable with the cb500 to adjust my speed. Now it's better but i still love smooth and slow acceleration like the rebel, do you think this one could be a great shot for it ? I know it's based on the rebel and i love that the shape is a bit different and a bit higher, i imagine it as the perfect balance between things i love and plan to test it but i would love to know what you think about the nervosity compared to the rebel 500 ! :)) Thanks a lot !
