You can start this exercise from the bottom ie no stretch reflex. You could use this as a power exercise utilising a receptive stretch reflex explosive movement.
It applies to the kayak stroke well because you are working the upper range of your push not the lower range. This is good for both applying to the kayak stroke and keeping the shoulder in a safe position.
Why not use a D/B ? well you could but it’s pretty hard to set up a “ auto stop” in the Plyo box with a D/B and you don’t need a spotter with this exercise Plus if your at home it’s easier to use the equipment at hand rather than buying a set of D/Bs which costs 1000s
