This hunt was high on the priority list for Gila Monster Outdoors. After having two unsuccessful elk hunts in years prior, Gaven was willing to do whatever it took to get his younger brother, Ethan, his first big game harvest. After spending weeks on the archery elk hunts, we did not have much time to scout this unit for elk.
Opening day was a slow day and hardly any game was seen. The team had two choices; either stay and find elk, or pick up camp and move locations. Luckily, on day two, they located a herd bull. After a few attempted stalks, they finally had an opportunity. Ethan was able to get a lane on the bull while Nick worked the calls. He took a shot that appeared to be a miss, but after not seeing or hearing the bull for a few hours, they knew he was down.
There was another bull that had taken over the harem of cows, and with another tag in their pocket, they made an attempt to chase him down. Sadly, they were never able to relocate the other herd bull and decided they would focus on the five mile pack out to get Ethan's bull back to camp.
Having the opportunity to help a youth hunter fill their first big game tag is always a blessing, and to capture it on video is even more rewarding. There is nothing like hunting elk in New Mexico, and we are very thankful that we were able to give Ethan a taste of hunting elk.
