We didn't know much about Taos Pueblo as we explored the area around Santa Fe in the north of New Mexico, but we quickly realized we had arrived at a genuine state treasure as we walked around this UNESCO World Heritage site. The Pueblo has been continuously inhabited for more than 1,000 years (not 400, as mentioned in the commentary) by the Tiwa peoples, and remains a living, breathing Native American community to this day. While it was a grey (and cold!) day, it was still possible to get a feel for the historic nature of the setting and the unique architecture. It wasn't without its achingly tragic side (a 19th century massacre by US forces in response to the 1847 Pueblo uprising), but it definitely highlighted a period of history, and an area, we knew nothing about.
