@@kdyooper28 All pilots of fixed wing airplanes have glider experience... You have to learn how to fly the airplane that way without an engine, from the very start. @@N75911_ Yes, that's true. However, 100% of fixed wing pilots have had to learn how to fly their airplane in simulated engine failures, which requires the pilot to learn how to GLIDE the airplane to a safe landing. Look up the Power off 180... It's a requirement for the Private and Commercial Pilot Certificates. Clearly you're not a real pilot because you'd know that little factoid.

As tense and dramatic as it was, it was a very short flight and by itself not enough to fill a hollywood movie even when they played through the whole thing twice from different viewpoints. It's such a shame that the movie producers opted to pad it out and create jeopardy by fabricating a hostile and finger pointing NTSB enquiry which was about as far removed from what actually happened as it was possible to get. Sullenberger saved all the souls on board that plane when he made the call to ditch in the river. It was something that had never been done successfully before. Only someone of his experience and seniority could make that split second call under that pressure. A younger pilot more beholden to "company policy" would most likely have tried to turn back to LaGuardia even though it was patently not possible. In doing so, and doing so successfully, he has laid down precedent for all pilots that this can be done, albeit with many things in your favor and I've no doubt pilot training has taken on board the lessons of that day as it does the lessons of every aviation incident. I'm well aware that every time that I disembark an aircraft after a safe landing I do so on the wings of all those who were not so fortunate.
