I find it very interesting watching Americans discover the rest of the world and thinking that everything else in the world is derived from American things. It must be a shock to the system to realise that the world doesn't revolve around the USA. And.... You don't need much skill to play rugby? What a fine remark. This is your first time watching the sport and the video was of tiny out of context clips. Well done on reinforcing the stereotypical American view of everything that isn't American.

You asked why Rugby was never brought to the USA. It was, years ago, when American colleges tried to play it. It was too rough for the spoiled rich kids, so the college authorities "refined" it. When it became more widespread, protection of the players was introduced and the game is now played by hulks in helmets, encased in Kevlar armour. When television began to broadcast games, it wasn't long before "food" companies realised that the American public can't go for more then fifteen minutes at a time without eating junk and drinking beer, so the game slowed down further and the breaks in play got longer. I'm not sure NFL fans could even conceive of a game like Rugby, which lasts for eighty minutes, with a break of ten or fifteen minutes at half time. Apart from that the action is non-stop. It's possible that NFL spectators might die of malnutrition trying to survive for a whole forty minutes without sustenance. For your enlightenment: Rugby might look like a lawless brawl, but it is a massively popular sport, played in 116 countries around the world. The rules are complex and you can't possibly understand them just by watching without knowing them. For one thing, throwing the ball forward is not allowed - passes must go backwards. The next World Cup is in France next year. If it's shown on US television (the USA is competing), why not watch it? God knows, it's a more exciting game than its debased and bastard offspring masquerading as football and played in only one country. In its insularity it's a bit like baseball. That's still played in the UK - nearly always by schoolgirls aged between five and eleven under the name Rounders. The baseball World Series should strictly be called the US rounders championship. "World Series" my arse - what arrogance! Incidentally, baseball's distinguished and distant ancestor, cricket - regarded as the most complex, skilful and graceful of games - has been around since Saxon times. (more than 1,400 years ago). There are 105 countries in the world which play cricket and are members of the International Cricket Council.

Dude you should spend a little less time writing and more time researching. If you had you would be keenly aware that cricket was holding on by a thread for years until the limited overs game came in which caused such a stir among the die hard stiff shirts at lords, the game had to evolve to limited overs even then 30 years or so later evolve again T20 had to come into the pic to bolster cricket. 5 day tests hardly raise enough money at the turnstiles to keep the ground staff going....... thank GOD for TV which really saved cricket. By the way cricket is played in countries around the world in conditions I bet you would not be found dead in. Like the slums of Bangladesh. If you were such a awesome rugby fan you know that anyone who beats his chest about how tough rugby is, probably hardly played or at under 11 level. YOU WOULD KNOW that clearly this channels creator never watched the game before and has at best seen the DUMBASS biggest hits clips which only blow the horn of the "me Tarzan" couch rugby players. Here was a perfect opportunity for you to spend a little more time telling this youngster about the game in a little more detail and redirecting him to clips that explain the game instead this youngster gets a whole bla bla bla about crap like Saxons playing rugby 1400 years ago, they probably also had the opportunity to use someone's head for a ball and the losing team gets drawn and quartered. Enough with the essay give some reasonable advice to an American kid who could end up liking rugby. The reality is World Rugby knows exactly how huge the market in the US is for rugby and they would do all they can including hosting the world cup there to light that spark.

I'm French and used to play rugby at school. I'm always happy to see American people discovering this sport and encourage to watch further and learn the rules (they're in fact called laws and there are a lot). There are a few excellent rugby tutorials on YT aimed either at the general audience or more specifically at American viewers (these ones use the comparison with NFL). I recommend you to watch one of these tutorials and then highlights from some of the best rugby games and players of these past seasons. I'm biased towards French rugby and so recommend the two games between France and the New Zealand All Blacks: the 1999 World Cup semifinals, and last years match. And the two superstar players NZ Jonah Lomu (RIP) and FR Antoine Dupont (best World Rugby player of 2021).

This is wrong on a number of counts. Arthur Wellesley (not to be confused with John Wesley, the founder of Methodism) was Duke of Wellington (not to be confused with Duke Ellington, the American band leader and composer). He is wrongly believed to have said that the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton (not Rugby) - at the time Eton had no playing fields. History's full of these half-arsed, mistaken attributions and distortions. In years to come, people will insist they witnessed Winston Churchill scoring the winning goal in the 1966 World Cup final. Look at how stupid and ignorant some American young people now are - those who have even heard about the moon landings believe John Glenn commanded the Apollo 11 mission and had also been the first man in space.

If you imagine a family tree. Mediaeval football is the trunk( still played today in Atherstone England once a year for 822 years and is on utube. Look for the doccumentary The Atherstone Ball Game, or the most brutal ball game. It is the most brutal the only rules being no killing, eye gouging or strangling). Rugby is the branch( its a highly technical game, has no downs, passing is fast more similar to basketball or hockey, kicking forward, throws lateral and back, no forward throw) . The twig is the NFL( you do not need the 360 degree awareness of rugby, the stamina for almost nonstop play, flexibility of roles so need muscular strength and speed throughout the team). You need to watch various rugby skills videos.

There is an old saying in our part of the world that it's not about the size of a dog in a fight - it's about the size of the fight in the dog. Rugby is the essence of this saying. American Football is very good and takes a lot of strength and skill - but it's rule bound and played by coaches who control strategy and rely on players to follow 'plays'. Rugby is played by players. The smallest player can control a game by how they read the play and how they hit just as hard as the big players. Learning how to make big tackles, how to take big tackles and how to keep the 'ball alive' throughout is important. The ball controls play !

Nice Reaction. I played Rugby for a few years, it's an amazing game, and is played by a variety of sizes and builds, Check out the "All Blacks" (yes thats the name, a reference to NZ culture and an inside joke)... they're the New Zealand national team and the most successful team in sporting history, officially, of any sport at the pro level. It's been stated before, but Rugby is the original form of NFL. Its a harder, faster, and more technically skillful game than NFL for several reasons, mostly however there are no stoppages like in the NFL. Rugby games are a constant battle over 80min with no alternate attack, defense, or special squads. They play at that pace for 40min, have a short break then play for another solid 40 min. In an NFL game, you are only actually playing for around 15min. The same players attack and defend, if they lose the ball then play continues, and the other team attacks.... constant motion
