I can't help but wonder how Buffalo would have fared vs the Devils in the conference finals had game 6/7 played out differently

They may have fared better than Pittsburgh because of Hasek but ultimately I still see the Devil's winning. The 2000 and 2001 teams were the best in Jersey history. They had defense AND they could score goals at a high rate. Eventually Buffalo would have been overwhelmed..

The next series against the devils was too disappointing to even bring up. Penguins were shut out back to back at home

Well, the 2000-01 Penguins team overachived. Yeah, they had both Lemieux and Jagr but the team’s defence was like a swiss cheese. Just looking at the highlights in this video, there are some pretty bad defensive plays. It’s amazing they made it to the Conference Finals.

The Penguins struggled against the Devils all season long. 2 months before Mario came back from retirement they were shutout at home 9-0, two Devils players had 4-goal nights. Only way to beat a neutral zone trap that NJ played is to dump and chase the puck, but Brodeur was a skilled enough puck handler to dish the puck out of the zone before the forecheck could even get to it a lot of times. This left the Penguins' forecheck completely helpless while of course they struggled defensively all season so they were just no match for NJ but it was a good run

Beyond frustrating. Straka-Lang-Kovalev was the greatest second line ever and we had Stevens-Lemieux-Jagr on the top line... How the hell do those two lines ever get shut out. Besides the clutching/grabbing they let slide

In an interview with Kasparaitis someone asked him before that series "What would you do if you scored a game 7 overtime goal?" And he said, "What are you crazy, that would never happen. I never score for one thing." 😂
