Yeah, I can think of a few others from that era I’d put in their league, but not many.. I just discovered This Heat a year or so ago, and was astonished that they aren’t a more talked about band from that era. Unbelievable what they created.

Feel compelled to point out that Captain Beefheart is not a synonym for "avant-garde," and/or any music one might perceive as unconventional. Damn, hoss, come on now cowboy.

Timothy Barnes then what should his music be called?
@e.7397
9 жыл бұрын
***** Feel compelled to point out, I'm an asshole making a point. Nonetheless, believe his music, as most unique & passionate music, is singular. Therefore I'd simply call his music: Captain Beefheart. Pretentious as it seems [is] it hurts one's heart to witness "crowds" compelled to put more than one artist in the same box (not name-calling but speaking in general). For instance and example, I do not refer to the music of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Jackie McLean as Jazz, rather I refer to their music as: Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Jackie McLean, depending on which one's music happens to be playing. I understand the meaning and intent behind the word: categorization, but vehemently resist its utility and semantic constraints that indeed influence art and creativity by way of limitation and sterility. (And, these categories might not exist, or be vastly different, if the music created was not disseminated in a market where packaging, promotion, airplay, touring performances, etc... attempt to influence the maximum amount of sales of said merchandised product and often trumps importance of musical content, making it secondary to the overarching product being sold. Of course the current dynamics of musical industry has changed drastically in recent years. Packaging, lack of packaging, artwork, dissolution of recording industries, stolen music, an artists righteous attempt to make a living, etc... are all a part of the rapidly shifting sands regarding current state of capital music. Apologies for the tangent but hope it help fills and, perhaps, distinguishes one's reflection regarding the categorization of art and its resultant demonic symmetry.)

Timothy Barnes wow those are a lot of clever thinks put together I almost can't stand it. Btw I found very interesting what you said, I think I'm going to change my WMP tags. I have it tagged like Blues Rock and Psychedelic Rock but I don't think it's exactly his kind of music. I think Beef-Rock suits perfectly. What do you think?

'Gang banged by a pack of marshmallows. It was dead' (meaning the gig they were at and/or the London scene in 1980, I guess). But the central 'schtupped by marshmallows' point is right. Hope that helps xx

The Pop Group were one of those rare bands that had no comparison in terms of "sounds a bit like.." Not then and not now. One of a kind unique band and sound. Gareth Sagers guitar had the same effect on me . I can relate to what Nick says in that regard. As did Gareths alto sax.

However your point is accepted and aknowleged and I thank you for the introduction to them.
