No, they didn't "invent" jazz (jass) but listen at 5:50 when they "take off." Man, that is a moment preserved; the ODJB of old. Fantastic.

The first hot jazz revival was in the late 1930s. A new wave of revival hits about every decade or so.

Actually the Wolverine Orchestra was the first revival jazz band, playing (and recording) in a dixieland style several ODJB tunes in 1924 which were old hat by then. It was pure Bix's doing; his "Gang" in 1927 was also a revival dixieland band, playing several of the same ODJB tunes.

Fun newsreel, but take the story telling with a grain of salt! Wish we had more of the clip of Stuff Smith and Jonah Jones!

:46 to 1:02, live sound footage of Chick Webb's band playing "Don't Be That Way" with soloists Sandy Williams on trombone and Taft Jordan on trumpet. Too bad about the racist comment "in dark Harlem's hot and noisy Savoy."
