It is a fair assumption to say that the postwar boom of passenger diesels caught the eye of the railfans, railroad employees and the public in a way no other locomotives could. Today their allure lies in their rarity, simply scrapped after a long working life, or cut in their prime thanks to dwindling passengers in the 1960. One such class that was almost extinct was the ALCO PA, the six axle passenger locomotive that was on borrowed time. The Nickel Plate Road's original 11 were only leased, and replaced by RS36s in 1961. The story didn't end quite there, as they left a lasting impressions on a young Doyle McCormack, who brought two of the four survivors to the United States. Former Santa Fe, then Delaware & Hudson 18 was carefully restored and finished off in a stunning recreation of Nickel Plate Road 190 in Portland Oregon. In this video, 190 is enroute to its new owner, the Genesee Valley Transportation Company. Someday I'll make it east to see 190 in action on the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad, but for now, seeing it run through my hometown was quite the sight!
