Thanks, Charles. I am that typical "weekend photographer" you mentioned. I want my work to be better and I have come to realize that I'm taking decent shots but have zero experience with post-production. Last night, I discovered NX Studio and was very excited to find out that it was free! I don't like the idea of paying $120-$240 per year for something when I can do most of what I need for free. This was the perfect video to show that you can indeed do wonders with software. I wonder how many of us would have looked at the original RAW photo and said "That didn't turn out. Trash it!" You showed so much in less than half an hour! VERY helpful.

Nikon Capture NX2 Preceded Lightroom and NX Studio, it was not free. It was wonderful and if you mastered it you could do anything with it, I never used anything else. I am delighted to see this is similar,. The great thing about Capture NX2 was the control points. You could literally recreate the photo like a great canvas only as small as a few pixels a a time. You never harm the NEF All edits you save as a version.

Thank you for making this video. I have been using LR for years, but refused to pay a subscription for LR for something I may not even use for a month or more at a time. Since all my cameras are old, this was not an issue until I bought my Z50 and LR6 could not read the NEF files from this model. My work-around is to use the free Adobe DNG Convertor to convert the NEF to DNG so that LR6 can then import. I suppose you can also use this tool to convert your NEF to DNG to deliver to your clients. The main issue with the DNG converter is that it only uses the Adobe Standard profile, and does not support camera profiles unlike LR. I found the results opening them in LR to be pretty disappointing compared to the JPG version from camera. I then opened the NEFs in NX Studio and was blown away with the NEFs apprearing just like my JPGs except better. Now I am determined to move to NX Studio especially for my Z50 photos. May do so in future for the older cameras as well. Once again, thanks for the tutorial.

Hi Charles. I have a question regarding the Nikon NX Studio please. My workflow is pretty simple. I go through my shots for the day (Just in Windows photo viewer) and I delete the gumpf, I only keep the best and most relevant photos. Keep in mind, these photos would typically be of an afternoon at the park of my kids playing, or a family lunch, etc, just memories photos. In Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw (ACR), I then select and open all the RAW files, for example the 50 photos I shot. I can then select all the Photos, and then I select the AUTO button on the right to apply a starting point of the edit. I then select each photo and maybe tweak the white balance, exposure, highlights, Shadows, sharpening and noise - just quickly, and typically I am happy with auto and I just move on to the next photo. If there is one photo that I like and was shot really badly (Over/Under exposed for example), I will spend a few minutes more tweaking that photo using pretty much all the options until it looks good. Thats it, I then select all and export to jpg, save to my cloud storage, and maybe whatsapp and Facebook share a few of them. So maybe 10 - 20 minutes I will spend overall. I really like how Nikon NX Studio presents the colours of the photos. The problem I find with Nikon NX Studio, is that I open all the 50 photos, but I have to manually edit the settings for each individual photo, I can't find an "Auto" option to emulate my ACR workflow? Is there a way to quickly edit though a bunch of photos with an "Auto" option, so that The NX Studio workflow can be sped up? Thank You Chris
@CharlesNPhotography
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is a very simple way of doing this and thanks for mentioning it to me as I will add this to my next tutorial on using NX Studio. So you select the first image in your folder > then go to Edit > Select All > all your images are now selected. To un-select all the images, just click on any of your images and you can work on that one image. To un-select just a few images in your collection Hold the Ctrl key down and use the left mouse button to un-select the images you don't want to continue to edit. Hope this helps you. Please leave a follow-p comment if I've helped you out, as this really helps me out. Thank you

The first 4 minutes or so are about failure to read DNG files so if (like me) you've never used DNG files, then that can be skipped. I upgraded to NX Studio from the previous Nikon software which I used for RAW development because PS Elements' own Adobe Camera Raw module was pretty limited with global adjustments only. I tend not to do much editing within NX Studio but instead I export lightly edited & converted TIFFs or JPEGs in order to work on them with PSE and Nik Tools plugins. This video shows NX Studio is pretty capable - so in future I may experiment with doing more with it before exporting.

What is the max resolution for NX Studio?
@CharlesNPhotography
Жыл бұрын
Are you asking about the maximum resolution that you can save a photo or what the maximum resolution it will accept. NX Studio will accept any Nikon camera, so the resolution is dependent on the camera you have. And when you save you image, this will also be dependent on what file format you ave your photo and how big you want it. For Facebook I save my photos at 2048px on the longest side, but if I print I will chose to save it at the default size of the photo after I have cropped the photo to get the best print possible.

Great tutorial Charles. I've been debating moving from Lightroom to NX Studio for a while for my Z9 images. I just feel LR does not get the most out of the Nikon RAW files, they always look just a little bit over processed in LR, not as 'smooth' as the files in Studio.

You can use NX Studio for editing your Z9 images, but understand that due to the files size of the images that editing your photos will be more time consuming than doing it in Lightroom. A mate of mine has the Z9 and he doesn't have any problems editing his images in LR.

I have found that if Nikon NX Studio hangs or stops working that I just reinstall it and it works again. Maybe download the latest version of NX Studio

Can you focus stack/shift with this program?
@CharlesNPhotography

No you can't and Lightroom Classic can't do it as well. You can use Photoshop or Helicon Focus to focus stack your images

For a version 1 this is a pretty neat piece of kit (and free1). I agree it is a bit slow with certain functions but its layout is fairly easy to use including for anyone not used to editing photographs. I cant help but wonder what future updates will offer.

Thank you for your detailed reply, and I agree with you that for a free program it's quite good. It took Adobe more than 4 years to start improving the speed of Lightroom, so I'm willing to give Nikon a break on speed. Like I said in the video, if I was just a weekend photographer I'd most likely use this program instead of Lightroom and save about $180 a year.

Hi Charles, could you tell me how to export more than 1 photo at a time. Thanks
@CharlesNPhotography
Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can export more than one photo at a time, all you have to do is hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and then use your mouse to select all the files that you want to export. Once all the files have been selected just click on Export and they'll all be saved

This is very much like the original free nikon software Nikon NX in the ease of use and which I have sorely missed since they ditched it and its compatibility with newer cameras such as my D500. I will be downloading this tonight 😊. One question though, there used to be an option in the export bit which was a choice of Facebook or Internet so you didnt have to resize the image manually for Facebook upload, is there still and easy option like that in the export image section 🤔.
@CharlesNPhotography

Thanks for commenting, unfortunately you have to manually set the size of the image when you export it

I would not hold my breath for dng support. I’m pretty sure it intentionally only supports Nikon files. Think of the software as an included accessory with your camera. It is free, but only if you buy a Nikon camera. They wouldn’t want users of other camera brands converting their files to dng and using the free Nikon software to edit them.
@CharlesNPhotography
3 жыл бұрын
I'm not holding my breath and only said that it would be great if they did. But you do realise that NX Studio can also edit TIF files that were created from DNG files. So if the reason behind not supporting NDG files is to stop people with other brands using it, then why allow support for TIF files.

What a brilliant video. Just added a D780 and a 70-200 f2,3 Nikon lens to my kit. I used my D7500 and a new Sigma 150-600 for a safari this September. I also signed up for Lightroom Classic and while setting up my new D780, had a look and a short try of NX Studio and was impressed. Then I stumbled on this video. You're the first person that has really explained Levels and Curves. Loved it when you then said you didn't really need it!! Everything was well explained and I am probably now only going to shoot in RAW and dump Lightroom. Subscribed. See you on your website.

Thank you so much for your feedback, yes NX Studio is very good for a free editing program for Nikon users. If I wasn't doing photography full-time, I would stop using Lightroom and just use NX Studio.
