Every American brass player who watches this is literally either crying their eyes out or drooling at how gorgeous this sounds. Lol. THIS is how I was taught to play brass as a kid in America back in the olden days. That's what you're supposed to sound like. Fantastic! 👍

This is what it means to be British, working class - proud, emotional, raised with music from the crib and with an ethic of service playing together even when apart.

There was a brass band playing by my supermarket in small town NZ. I asked their leader if she listened to the Black Dyke band? "No, who? ", she said. Next week she came up to me in the street. "They are wonderful, we want to be like them"! Inspiring.

How do a people produce such wonderous beauty and feeling but also produce The Trenches , The Bayonet and organised Warfare. The best of times the worst of times - that's us ?

First time I remember hearing this was in the early 1960s, on a recording made by my secondary school music teacher, Lt. Col. Sam Rhodes with the band of the Scots Guards, which he had previously been director of. I have to say I love your version just as much. I so much wanted to learn the french horn, but it never happened, my parents couldn't afford to buy me one, I knew that, so I never asked.

The poppies in the last clip are so poignant when so many decent young men perished, including George Butterworth. (Though Elgar wrote Nimrod 20 years before WW1) Steven Isserlis's cd with the Trench Cello is fantastic.... another celebration to honour those who's lives were destroyed by political wickedness.
