Thank you much! Just used this video to tighten my chain which had gotten so loose that it came off while riding! Never been into any type of mechanical maintenance so didn't know what the odd clicking noise that had started up recently was. Drives great after working on it. Couldn't have done it without you! Took less than an hour.

Scary! Glad there wasn't any damage to you or the bike and you got it straightened out. When I rode my bike as a DD i lubed the chain weekly and checked the slack at the same time - you can't check too often.

I want to point out that cleaning your chain like this might not do it if there is excessive dirt. Have you tryed out using diesel with a toothbrush ? IT's dirty work so put on a workingsuit but it works like a charm. If you are putting the spray on also use a piece of newspaper of whatever and put it between the wheel and the chain so NO LUBE comes onto the wheel, this is extremely dangerous for slipping when going deep.

adjust chain tention while the bike is grounded. When the motorcycle is lifted, the swing arm is lowered and the chain tension will be a false reading.

This is true when using a center lift (frame lift). However, I lifted the rear wheel using the swing arm itself so there's no difference putting it on the ground.

Good video just make sure you don't get lube on your tire or it will be slippery!

Haha I once wiped my tires down entirely with tire shine Then I read the warning that said only for side walls SLIPPERY But damn the tires were shiny for a bit though

when cleaning the inside of the chain you are turning the rear wheel in an incorrect manner! That's an easy way to lose a finger! You show the correct way to do it when you lubed the chain, at the end. Always turn the wheel clockwise when you're cleaning the bottom part of the chain. I usually hang a rag to block any over spray from getting on my tire

A good video, but the author presumed the chain is evenly worn and both sprockets are in good shape. That's the first thing to check, since an unevenly worn chain can not be properly adjusted. With the bike on the stands, turn the wheel and check slack at several points. If the slack changes more than a 1/2" or so, time for a new chain! Also, search "worn sprockets" to see what yours should look like. Chain wear sneaks up on you and a new one (with new sprockets) can be a revelation!

what is the purpose of adjusting to the chain?
@GroundZ3R0Gamer

Should you tighten the chain so there is absolutely no slack ?? I'm new to riding so I don't know too much
@nicoj36

because a motorcycle chain loosens after a while of riding, and you need to tighten it
@Alleyboy88

So your chain won't fall off the sprockets or snap off from too much tension while you are riding it.

what is the purpose of doing the outside of the chain? the lube wont penetrate through the chain and it will just fall off once u start riding.
@Alleyboy88

Because dirt likes to travel. What's to say that dirt on the outside wont work it's way inside the chain.

Hopefully you are older and wiser, I am replying to help out newbies. Never lube chain under engine power, you can get your hand, rag or clothing caught and loose a few fingers or your hand. If you don't believe me check live leak.

Don't EVER put your hands around a chain or sprocket when the engine is on. I have seen some nasty photos of some guy who did exactly what you're implying and lost his fingertips.
