I remember when a bunch of RPG-29s turned up in Iraq. To say the theatre became hairy for armor would be something of an understatement. The story was the brass and politicians had to encourage the Russians not to ship any more into the region - a bit like the British did with Exocet grey imports during the Falklands. Those 29s struck the fear of god into everyone.

It's assumed, since it's in service, that it's performance is satisfactory, per army requirements set in the trials. They won't improve the design, just because it can perform a little better. In fact, from the corporate standpoint - it's more profitable for them, if the launcher performs just barely well enough so that they get a contract, but not too well. It being less effective, or malfunctioning, increases their profits. Since the army has to buy more/more spare parts.

its amazing how this missile just uses an inertial guidens system to track the tiny movent of the gunners tracking the target to generate a parabolic flight path that would hit a target moving at the recorded rotational translation regardless of range.
@dennisyoung4631
Ай бұрын
Do these achieve “lock” on the target?
@nikolagaborov2428
Ай бұрын
@@dennisyoung4631 not really, they have a gyros that spin up (thus the delay for firing) and uses them also to track how fast the gunner is rotating the NLAW (basicaly get angular speed, really simple mechanism when compared to some other military things) and uses some basic ballistics math (trigonometry) in order to keep that lead. Due to it being relatively fast missile, guidance doesn't have to last long and thus it doesn't require long prep time/more advanced computer etc
@nikolagaborov2428
Ай бұрын
Also to finalize my answer, they don't "lock on", as they don't have any ACTIVE seeking sensors (no camera, no FLIR, no radar etc), they merely keep flying straight/keep the lead by memorizing where they were pointed using their INS (Inertial Navigation System) which is PASSIVE.
@kiwanozukai1180
15 күн бұрын
@@nikolagaborov2428 an additional detail is that the rocket aims its projectile once it reaches the target by detecting certain signatures of the vehicle's material. that's kind of a lock on system in the sense that it's autonomous, but it's not a radar or heat trace, and doesn't happen while you're aiming the launcher

Good stuff as usual. One small English note, “tracking” would be the more appropriate term than “leading.” Tracking means keeping the chevron on target, leading would mean putting the chevron ahead of the target. Edit for clarity and knuckleheads like @user-mc6lv7mu9p. You don't need to lead with the NLAW, the computer does all the calculations for you. You just have to track your target for a few seconds while the computer makes said calculations. Edit 2: @user-mc6lv7mu9p is doubling down on their ignorance. Folks, don't make wild speculations on topics you know nothing about.

OTA technically stands for Overfly Top Attack. As flies over the target and the shape charge pointing down fires in the target, as opposed to the javelin which flies up, and then flies down directly into the tank, and has a forward facing shape charge warhead. And DA stands for Direct Attack.

So adorable that you use a PG-7 for a pointing stick!
9 ай бұрын
Some minor details, you don't get 3-4 tries to aim, the battery can handle at least 20. I would strongly recommend that at ANY armored vehicle you use OTA. If you use DA you only get the detonation effect of the warhead, no shaped charge effect at all, it will all go into the ground. Other than that, great video, and I must say, the part about how lack of training equipment in the beginning is extremely important! Could you maybe make a video where you especially focus on lack of training equipment? I'm thinking both simulators for NLAW and training weapons (9mm and 20mm) for AT-4 and CG? I can't stress enough how much that might help...

In hunting language, in english, "leading" means to aim ahead to where you expect the target to be when the proyectiles reach it. Leading is what you do when you shoot with a shotgun at ducks or grouse because the shot takes time to reach the bird. I guess what you mean to say is to "track" the aimpoint as it moves, that is, put the chevron on the aimpoint and keep it there if the target moves while the system is doing the calculations with the lever depressed.

I don't see why three 18650 batteries in series wouldn't work as a replacement battery. You could easily replicate this with a 3D printer - or even just tape the batteries together and wire them up with push fits. I don't know for sure - I just quickly read through the specs, but as long as the voltage between 12.6 and 10.5 it should work fine.

They aren’t that great because the engagement ranges and bulk/weight make them extremely difficult to close with the enemy. As he mentioned in the video they have multiple significant points of failure, and only a few minutes of battery life. There’s some obvious issues with the fact that the missile cannot account for changes in elevation or direction of the target. At 200m/s maximum velocity and 40m/s at the point of launch, the actual maximum time to impact is going to be up to six seconds, and the reality is that a T90M has third generation thermals that can detect man sized targets well past two kilometres. It just makes it a very rare case for the weapon to even be deployed. It’s just too large and heavy for the trench fighting that goes on now.

@@BotNard Its a disposable light anti-tank weapon. Given to riflemen and not dedicated anti tank teams. Compared to your average LAW like AT-4 or RPG its way better. It has a ballistic computer so is more likely to hit what you shoot at, especially if the target is moving, and has top attack so can knock out a modern main battle tank from any aspect. Neither of which AT-4 or RPG can do. Light anti-tank weapons are used defensively and at shorter ranges, You don't send poor sods out to hunt tanks with them... you use dedicated anti tank assets for that. like drones, ATGM teams, artillery or tanks. Infantry use LAW when dedicated AT assets are absent or busy, preferably when they can ambush tanks. And then NLAW has been proven to blow up lots of Russian tanks. why valgear made this video. poorly trained idiots don't like NLAW. he is trying to dispel that illusion, and doing a good job.
