I oppose the live cattle export trade. We are appeasing Islam and allowing our livestock to be slaughtered in a primitive fashion let alone the distress of being sent onomg journeys. Let us process meat here, ban halal and freeze and export. Let us lower the price of domestic food...not export it creating shortages and forcing prices up.

The very noisy and reprehensible Australian primary producers who condone the disgusting abuse of animal welfare continue to avoid discussing the atrocious third-world slaughtering practices. Contrary to quoted partisan reports, the financial advantages to Australia, together with the vastly improved quality and selection of meats available to the Australian consumer, negate any spurious argument to the contrary.

Little proud is a big mouth with no substance. If he had he would put it to the supreme Court to adjudicate whether there is cruelty and suffering brought about by live export. The law says puting animals in a position of harm and cruelty is a crime. So all of those people who participate in the crime can be prosecuted. Don't sugar coat it little proud bringitto high court. What is so conveniently ignored (lied about) is that the Australian conditions of live sheep export has been dramatically improved in terms of space, feed/water, veterinary supervision/care in the last few years. Riccardo Bosi, national leader of AustraliaOne, interviewed a person who worked & researched Australia's live export & its vast improvement & the information is eye-opening. This is a political, not a live sheep export game. No wonder most, if not all trust, in government(s) is now the norm.
@KatrinaLove62

There's been no improvement in terms of veterinary care unless you mean that whereas there used to be one vet for 110,000 animals when we were using double-tiered behemoths we no longer use, there is now one vet for 50,000 sheep. If that one vet spent one minute with each sheep, it would take 34 days to get to them all. If you read the Independent Observer reports you will discover that ASEL breaches are rife. An analysis I carried out in 2022 of all voyages with both sheep and Independent Observers (IOs) aboard between April 2018 and June 2020 (41 voyages) showed that ASEL breaches were observed on around 75% of those voyages. It is not possible to upload the spreadsheet in a format that works, but I am happy to provide it if requested. The breaches included: ● poor quality feed including mouldy feed ● dirty drinking water ● withholding feed ● withholding water ● insufficient space ● incompetent, incomplete or absent euthanasia ● incorrect storage of medications ● lambing (late-stage pregnant ewes should not have been loaded) ● sheep dying or needing to be euthanised for shearing cut infections (injured sheep should not have been loaded) ● sheep dying or needing to be euthanised for dog bite wounds (injured sheep should not have been loaded and all dogs working with sheep must be muzzled). All these breaches were permitted to occur when exporters/crew/stockpersons/vet knew that IOs were watching, recording and reporting back to the regulator. What do we think occurred during the period June 2020 to May 2022 when no IOs were aboard and observing due to Covid? What do we think is happening currently (since May 2022), whilst barely any voyages have IOs aboard, the data they are providing is uncomprehensive, and there is virtually zero transparency? There have been at least 54 voyages from Fremantle to the Middle East with sheep aboard since the last voyage in June 2020 (the end date for my analysis), pre-the Covid-related suspension of IOs aboard, and only 13 of those 54 voyages have had IOs aboard. The most recent voyage we have an IO report for is from Sept 2023 - nine months ago and one report from then is still pending. Much in-depth insight into voyages provided by 2018-2020 reports is now missing. ESCAS breaches were also observed during the 2018-2020 period in the unloading of some vessels and continue to be observed in handling and slaughter practices and supply chain “leaks” in importing countries. My IO report analysis also showed varying degrees of heat stress observed on over 60% of those voyages. Equally importantly, heat stress was observed during every month of the year outside of the prohibition period (the northern hemisphere summer moratorium on the export of live sheep by sea), i.e. heat stress was observed in January, February, March, April, May, September, October, November, and December.

It's not at all important for anyone except those few who make some percentage of their income from it because it's convenient. At what cost? Sending hundreds of thousands of Australian sheep who would have at least been stunned and spared the extended transport if slaughtered here, thousands of kilometres and three weeks by sea to have their throats cut whilst fully conscious is a nett animal welfare loss. Especially when those Middle Eastern countries we export those live sheep to all (except Israel) import chilled meat valued at $632 million versus the $77 million the live sheep exports are worth. There are around 100 countries that already export live sheep - they don't NOT export because we do. The voyages from those countries will be overwhelmingly shorter than from Fremantle - up to a difference of 14 hours versus 15.6 days.
