So, the shoe still has a foot in it? Is that why he thinks it's standing? Was it just way too gory for his mind to accept?

Many times during that scene from Jupe's POV, we never see the straight up gore - it's just implied, or heard. But the visuals are always conveniently blocked out by furniture or something. How much of that was reality, and how much was Jupe's mind protecting itself? That shoe was right out in the open, there was no plausible way for his mind to cover up the gore with furniture. So instead, the gory foot is blanked out. It's mysteriously standing up.

I think the shoe is standing, but it's just there for juxtaposition. The odds that the shoe landed that way are soooo unlikely and it can be compared to the seemingly HIGHLY unlikely odds that Gordy would hurt anyone. But just like the importance of the whole Gordy show being in the story, it's a microcosm of what the movie is about. We think it's so unlikely, like the shoe that we forget that it can happen, just like a wild animal attacking people is likely to happen.
@kylehahn4410

I think this is a very strong perspective on it, and I'll just reiterate it (and probably be redundant). We look at a shoe standing and try to find some greater meaning to it, but just like the obsession with UFOs and aliens, the truth is it's just an inconsequential detail amidst a much more primal reality, which is as you said: a wild animal attacking people.

well the shoe does still stand in the other shot. the implication that it’s the young girl’s shoe is enough to be horrifying, i don’t really think you need the vague implication that ACTUALLY he saw her right there and her leg was cut off or something. and then it’s on display in the same exact position. the “unexplained” mysteries that trauma can root itself around is a pretty major theme of the film. the shoe haunts him because it’s totally unexplained, like the coin killing the father at the start. the event was what’s traumatic but he holds onto the coin and follows the alien just the same as steven yeun thinks about the shoe pointing up to certain death, in the form of balloons or the form of aliens.
@nickperez915
Жыл бұрын
Both the shoe and the coin represent the same thing a “bad miracle” after Gordy happened, it gave Jupe national fame and is the reason he thinks he’s chosen; after OJs father dies with the coin going through his eye opens the idea to him that there’s a creature no one has seen in the area and gives them the shot of Jean jacket. Both items are hung on a wall and both instances were one in a million that started a chain of events which led the characters to where they are when we meet them
@tysk6726

Why is the shoe a “bad miracle”? I would say it is a good miracle happened in a bad situation. I believe the shoe is what distracted Jupe from looking Gordy in the eyes during his frenzy moment. This was my thought exactly! I think a theme of this scene and the movie as a whole is the fallibility of memory. To me, it was a way of showing that the scene was a memory of Jupes and not a narrative flashback for the audience. As we replay memories, they tend to warp-especially if it’s a traumatic memory we play over and over. The shoe is a brilliant device for this.

I’m a years late to this but here’s my take, since we all agree the Gordy scene is being taken from Jupe’s perspective, he chooses what he want to believe and see. He only sees the shoe floating by itself, so much he had to prop it up in the same manner in the display case. With that strong belief, Jupe blocks/refuses any logical reasoning for why the shoe is upright. His mind is made up, almost as if he is saying “nope” to anyone who thinks otherwise.

6:13 did and didn't happen It's been discussed here before how Jupe is constantly reminding people of the Gordy attack (the ape-like alien costumes, the yellow shirts with red trim that his staff wears, etc.) but I haven't seen anyone challenge the 6:13 thing. For the most part it seems like most people take Jupe at his word on that but I don't buy it. I think it's only half true and he's lying about the other half, but I don't know which exactly. Either the Gordy Massacre was 6 minutes and 13 seconds of havoc and he made up the "6:13pm" shit with Jean Jacket, or vice-versa (I'm even willing to entertain the notion that maybe his first encounter with Jean Jacket might have been 6:13 and was completely fortuitous but Jupe added significance to it out of desperation/delusion. And, from then on, fudged the numbers with subsequent encounters to push the Gordy parallel for his show). I also don't buy that he even believes in "The Viewers," he knows or suspects that Jean Jacket is an animal and thinks he's "chosen"/special and can tame it - we know the rest.
