Not to often you get to witness an asteroid burning up in the atmosphere but that is what I saw, well, it was cloudy here but I was still able to observe a brief flash at exactly the time it was predicted to enter the atmosphere (02:59 UT) It is barely noticeable in the video was more obvious to the eye but from the videos I have seen from those lucky to have had clear skies it looked spectacular. I was looking quite low to the south in the direction of Le Havre in France which is where it was expected to enter the atmosphere, at least that was my understanding but the videos from the UK it appeared higher in the sky than I expected. The flash i saw was most likely when it exploded at the end of its flight.
The asteroid, named Sar2667 was discovered earlier on the 12th of February 2023 which also happens to be the 75th anniversary of another asteroid impact over Russia which produced the Sikhote-Alin meteorites, that was a much bigger object though (about 85ft across) compared to Sar2667 which was around 1 meter, will be uninteresting if anything survived and landed on the ground, might have dropped into the sea. It also happens to have occurred just 2 days before the 10th anniversary of another famous fall, again over Russia, the Chelyabinsk event, that was also a much bigger object (17-20 meters)
I think Sar2667 is only the 7th asteroid which has been detected before hitting our atmosphere.
Негізгі бет Ғылым және технология Nothing spectacular just a quick very faint flash as a small asteroid explodes in atmosphere.
