_X Files_ peaked at Seasons 2 ~ 3 but as long as it was Mulder and Scully in it the whole shebang remained solid, and that’s not to say that myriad later individual episodes wouldn’t surpass the early peak quality (which is also integrally linked to fundamental ’freshness’ as much as inherent quality), ‘cos they sometimes did. I found that the whole thing just got bogged down in mythos and began to alienate anyone who didn’t check in with near-religious regularity . . .

Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Buffy/Angel ended well, as a result their fandoms kept the IP alive to this day or until Jar Jar Abrams and his acolytes got their hands on one of them. Battlestar Galactica was huge in the early 2000's, but had a very divisive ending that saw half of the fans walk away and as a result that show has been marginalized. X-Files falls into the same category as Lost, huge at the time, shat the bed by how it ended and like BSG has been forgotten too.

I really liked the early mythology episodes. The problem was that the writers couldn't make their minds up about where it was going, so I tuned out in the end. Are they aliens or is it all a government psy-op? They changed from one to the other so many times I got bored and annoyed by it. I also thought the shape-shifting 'bounty hunters' were a bit silly too. The invasion plan and the hybridisation of the human race stuff was OK. It was quite interesting to discover that the syndicate had different factions and some of them had good intentions. Overall, it outstayed its welcome. And a new series made by Disney? About as welcome as an erection at a funeral.
@Simon-xc5oy
8 ай бұрын
Yes exactly I really wish it had followed through on its set ups and Aliens plots. We had Babylon 5 setting things up and then paying off season after season, and that is what I was expecting from X-Files. What it ended up being is a forerunner of Lost. A great setup, interesting characters, promise of story to come and threads created, with mystery in the offing and Aliens out there waiting to get up to no good. And it all got more and more complex, more unbelievable, with no pay offs, no explanations and plots shifting and being dropped and over written. Or as in the case of Mulders sister, being solved in the stupidest and least satisfying way ever. She is dead...or not...maybe and was really taken by Aliens, or not or has become "Star Stuff" whatever that is!!!???! I really wish...what would have been incredible. Is if they set up all the Alien stuff over those years. And then Mulder and Scully know what is coming and are out preparing when Dogget etc is the focus. The the invasion happens. Aliens are real. Earth is taken over and it becomes a war of resistance against them with Mulder and Scully leading the good guys in a fight back. That what I was hoping for and expecting. And in the revival when those Aliens finally show up in force and it looks like the invasion is on and Earth is going to fall and Mulder was right from the very start I was excited. Then in the next episode it turns out to be a dream / illusion / Mulder is drugged or whatever and it all resets and goes back to normal like it never happened and its monster of the week time again! I gave up at this point and I have never watched X-Files since. I never will again. And certainly not a remake or reboot as it will be more of the same, just worse writing with a diverse cast. Mulder will probably be black and gay and Scully will be a lesbian....

I'm not sure people feel the same way about urban myths and conspiracy stories. I think both the mythology angle, and the paranormal aspect have pretty much been played out, as far as the show is concerned. Current year = unnecessary and excessive swearing with generous helpings of over-representation; Exhibit A: 'Justified' (2010 to 2015). The verbal sparring between US Marshal Raylan Givens and calculating crook Boyd Crowder was sublime, and even the side characters such as Wynne Duffy were well-written and a joy to watch. Why be surprised? I'm sure these hacks have a list of every show they wanna violate, it's not like they can come up with new stuff.

WTF-Files! I agree completely, although I stuck out the original nine seasons as a loyal fan ("Nine years of X-Files makes the hard fan humble"--oh boy!) The worst in the later years was Mulder's death and return (what sh*tty comic-book-level writing!) and the final episode, which aped the Seinfeld closer (Jay-zus Chr*st!), AND left M&S on the lam! I refused to watch that brief six-ep run years later when I heard they'd brought back the CSM (whom they immolated in the original series finale!) Couldn't imagine any stories that followed had much imagination or originality. Why, oh WHY do we have studios suits thinking we fans just want another ride on the same roller-coaster? Which is falling apart! And the fans who keep watching this recycled garbage? Grow up and stop driving into the future with your eyes glued to the rearview mirror!

You'll have the usual crowd with their ad hɒmɪnɛm coming in to attack you on a personal level because they've never bothered to listen to any of your points, so the only way they know how to 'debate' is cry that you're still making videos and that you just won't go away for them. Nothing but personal attacks. Never countering any of your points with explanations telling you are wrong, no sentences formed that tell us why they think their _thing_ is ''good''. They clearly don't like you, yet like lambs to the slaughter their obsession with you compels them to peep beyond their safe bubble as to how things are really going down out their in reality. Trouble is, the whiffs of truth are all too much for them and there's some serious coping behaviour because they know, deep down inside, they're the bigots.

Look, unless they're busting out the writing talents, of one Tommy Wiseau, I can't be bothered. Readers, of keen eye, MAY have noted my wording and, YES, they DO manufacture those now. :/

It would be real nice if they could use their brains and come up with something totally new. Use whatever characters they want just make them uniquely new. To be honest I quit watching remakes years ago.

Agreed about the mythology episodes of the "revived" series. But some of the standalones, especially "Followers" (the almost silent episode with all the AI and robots) was bloody excellent. The one where Pee Wee Herman was murdering children was definitely a very low point. The mythology episodes, with the very unfortunate titles of "My Struggle" (look up that one in German) were just plain bad. The original X-Files run was directly inspired by the Kolchak movies and TV series. What's the "new" X-Files going to be inspired by? Oh, I think we know the answer to that one.

I'm glad I know nothing about the way later recent season(s). I never liked remakes even when Dredd was okay and Robocop only made me die a little. They just didn't have any creativity. A sequel at least hopefully moves things forward and spices it up. A remake is so lazy whether you have Robocop play catch with his kid or completely make the identical movie like Cabin in The Whys.

I think the return was ok, not great, but there were some good old monster of the week episodes. The Trump bullshit was simply pathetic. But I never liked the mythology episodes, so I also went through them with the same boredom. No matter if the stuff with Trump, Bigfoot or their son. Why do TV kids have always be such a pain in the ass. Has anyone seen "The Strain". A really good show, but this kid... I also had no problem when Duchovny left left the show. Scully was for me always the better part. The rational one who was open to the unthinkable. Reyes and the T1000 were ok. Actually, I really liked Reyes. And let's be honest: there is always a flow of staff in a company or an institution like the FBI, so the change was fitting. This re-boot is a completely different animal, and you can bet that at least one of the two(?) lead will be non white. And with that, with that new principle against white people, I'm out before the have started. Maybe, just maybe, I would accept an Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, native American, Latino, Eskimo, Pacific Islander, Atztec, Inka...but ever ever a black. Diversity in Hollywood means blacks, nothing else. The group that causes the most problem in the society, and contributes the least.

The original series 'lucked' into the advancing mythology. However, they never planned for a clear resolution. In the effort to keep the mystery alive, they created inconsist mythology expansion episodes that lost luster very quickly. Had CC been smart, there would have been a West Coast 'B' team who helped out sporadically, but were natural heirs to the program after say, five years of Mulder and Scully. The movie should have resolved Mulder and Scully's narrative, destroyed the Syndicate, but hinted at a new extraterrestrial threat to fill the void. (Nature abhors a vacuum.) The organic introduction of the successor team would have felt organic and meaningful. A new mythology related to the new threat could have been constructed without sullying the first. The second five years could have been as strong as the first as a result. Trying to introduce the new team of Doggett and Reyes was too late in the series run after the epic seven years of Mulder and Scully, and the de-evolution of the mythology lost the interest of the viewers. The revival served to reinforce the same weaknesses that plagued the final four years of the original run. So now, in the midst of the wokenazis dominating the entertainment medium, any attempt to revive or reboot the series is doomed to failure. However, I don't put it past Disney since they own Fox properties, and they are going to be desperately scrambling for any classic property to mine for revenue.

It's sad they can't think of an original TV series these days. Butchering old ones is the best they can do. This old fan won't be tuning in, that's for sure.

The first reboot/revival was awful. Then they brought it back again and it was even MORE awful. If this moves forward at all, it'll be all new casting. Not only have both DD & GA aged out, they are both SO over it. I don't blame them! They put in a lot of years. Actors want to move on. The last 2 revivals they looked like they were sleepwalking. It didn't help that they had such crap scripts to work with.
