Thing is Who has always been as subtle as a brick, even in the early years, they just use it as a means to deflect backlash because RTD is crap when it comes to writing a show like Doctor Who. I mean look at his era in 2005-2010, the only good episode Davies wrote was midnight and turn left. The only other good episodes were written by Steven Moffat, and Robert Shearman (dalek).

Get Tennant and Tate back, put in three rollicking good classic stories with well known monsters, minimal "political comment" and attract the audience that might actually watch it (transgender activists mostly won't) and who would give it another chance (I did...) and build it up to give Ncuti Gatwa a boost at the start after a Doctor who was not popular, to put it mildly. It appears RTD is either stupid or doesn't care. If there are two more of these Gatwa will start with fewer viewers than Whitaker finished with. If he goes "gay Doctor" (I don't care if the man himself is gay, it's whether the show is full of gay politics and relationships etc.) it'll be him and his mum watching by the end of the season.

Could you imagine RTD writing a foil for the Doctor that was as well-rounded as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart? People seem to forget he was brought back in during the Pertwee era as quite an antagonistic figure originally, but one the Doctor grew to respect. A classic British military stuffed-shirt, but a decent man. The difference is that you can have a progressive message within a good story and even if you don't care for the message, you've that good story to enjoy. NuWho increasingly doesn't care about the good story, and it is just a vehicle for the Sermon of the Week from Father Russell/Chris/Stephen.

Glorious tirade, Mr Bowlestrek, glorious! I'm glad you've kept the sign-off! However, I am bound to repeat that I never had hopes for Dr Who with Davies at the helm. I recall sitting with friends in an Indian restaurant on the night the TV series was due to restart. We all wanted to finish up and go home to watch it. As we paid and left, we chatted with some other diners and there was a palpable feeling of excitement and hope. Except for me. I was the only one counselling that it was likely to be childish drivel with poor production values, especially in comparison with Battlestar Gallactica that was out at the same time. I was dismissed as comparing apples to oranges. I'll accept the comparison wasn't fair, but Dr Who had superb writing with the first seven Doctors and the shambolic production values put pressure on some of the better actors of the day to try harder to break the disbelief. The reboot used flashy production to cover up poor acting (even Charlie Brooker described it as too much "gurning" in one of his Screenwipe episodes). For me, the real warning was the spinoff series "Torchwood" with the first episode having a security operative masturbating in front of a CCTV feed. Davies is a deviant and his previous shows have always shown it. In the early Chistopher Eccelston, David Tennant and Matt Smith days, the BBC had more sense than to allow the show to be poisoned by politics and activism (although I found the Captain Jack character to be beyond the pale at times). It was the later Matt Smith episodes where the politics started to creep in, but the audience stuck with it as it was not yet clear what was happening. I have plotted the 'Who' audience figures and it's clear that the decline experienced wth Peter Capaldi as the Doctor could only have happened with the writing during the Matt Smith tenure. Jodie Whittaker saw a recovery - due to novelty - and then a steeper decline. This new incarnation hasn't even caused a spike of novelty, and it is clear the decline will be even more precipitous.

When I see an article that unironically declares people to be "bigots", "transphobic", and "haters", I already know I'm not dealing with adults. Nor can they even back up the stuff they say is good, claiming the Rose storyline to be "heartwarming", yet the closest we get to an explanation as to why is because the episode featured "her identity as a trans woman front and centre throughout the episode". That's what it takes to tug the heartstrings in 2023, apparently - simply have a trans character in the show with everyone constantly pointing out their superficial characteristics. Compare this to, say, the Black Mirror episode 'San Junipero' - is it good because it features two lesbians, or because we actually got to know them as actual human beings rather than a bunch of cliches?

The opposite of love isn't hate. Both are passionate. You care if you hate someone. You think about that person. The opposite of love is apathy. I honestly don't care what they do on this goofy show anymore. Just like I never cared what they did on the spin offs. BBC and PBS can make any kind of content they want. Sorry Ken Burns I'm just not going to watch a 10 hour documentary about how the holocaust is America's fault. I'm not making that up btw. All it does is call into question all his previous documentaries. I look back at Star Trek The Next Generation as a blatantly anti capitalist socialist propaganda piece. The episode where they thawed the capitalist guy out and proceed to berate him for an hour.

When it was announced that RTD was taking over Doctor Who again i was over joyed, When it was announced that David Tennant was back as the current Doctor i was overwhelmed, when it was announced that Catherine Tate was coming back i was mindblown (in a way) i was thinking this coupd be the start of the turn around it was very clever to get the arguably best era people of the new Who era it could bring back fans and viewing figures, when i saw the trailer for the 60th i was so excited for it but then i seen the 1st episode and dear god the whole trans thing does not belong in a Sci-fi show i dont mind there being trans characters or actors in them but dont make the whole plot solved cos someone who is a guy dress up as a woman to say he is not a guy or a woman who then later says that oh wait a minute you're David Tennant nor Jodie Whittaker so you'll understand fuck all along with the rest of every other Doctor btw i just want Doctor who back as it was from season 1-10 good writing, good character development, great plot points, brillitant monsters/villains old and new

If they think that this show is for everyone, and that so many people think as they do, and the 'haters' are driving down the score of the show, why did only 5 million people tune in to see the '60TH ANNIVERSARY EPISODE"? The 50th Anniversary episode was watched by millions of people around the globe and a huge event. This '60TH ANNIVERSARY EPISODE' was watched by just over 5 million people, and so many of them didn't like it. Of course, these weirdos want to make us the enemy.

I didn't mind the trans motif or the character. I don't think she did a very good job (although I do think it's hilarious Donna saying in the Tardis that Rose couldn't act. Felt very unintentionally meta) for how central to the plot she was, but it's whatever. Not the first time Doctor Who has some questionable casting. What I do mind was how much on the nose all of this was. I really do want to hear from a trans person if they felt properly represented in this episode, because I can't imagine that being the case. I find it strange that on an episode with a fucking Furby and Mantis soldiers, the most alien creature was the trans woman. None of her dialogue (or any dialogue surrounding her) felt realistic or like something people would say. It almost felt cartoony. Everything felt on-the-nose, like pandering. It's actually difficult to believe it's coming from the same person who wrote Captain Jack, a bisexual character that won everyone's heart on his very first appearance - and mind you, this was in 2005, the world was not kind to people of different sexualities back then. It's totally fine to have a trans character, really. I don't mind this at all and I'm glad that people are beginning to become more accepting of trans people. But what the fuck is this dialogue man, what is this plot. Why couldn't they just write a decent fucking episode. It didn't even need to be good or anything, the bar is so goddamn low that I honestly thought it'd be impossible for them to fuck up. And somehow, they managed to do exactly that. We just want good writting back, RTD, for fuck's sake. Have trans, gay, straight, black, white, tall, fat...whatever characters. Just make good fucking stories about this alien person who goes around in a police box solving alien mysteries. I'm sure there are people who got upset there was a trans person in this story. Of course. But I also doubt that if we had gotten an amazingly written, super fun and SPECIAL-WORTHY episode, no one would've even cared about her identity. No one is hating on the character (because she was not a character, she was a plot-device!) but instead on yet another shitty written episode with an agenda. Like we didn't just had 5 or 6 years of that and everyone hated it so much they even had to bring back the one guy who we all thought could save this mess. What a waste of an introductory episode for an event we've been waiting ever since the 50th established one of the coolest episodes of this show. Fucking hell I can't believe I allowed myself to believe for a second that things would get better.
@paulscottrobson

I think the thing that's upsetting is immediately after a mega-woke series of shows, they did something which was even more so, and targeted - the male/female can't act for toffee, and the other characters kept praising her for no apparent reason "Oh my daughter is so gorgeous and beautiful". It makes you wonder if it will somehow get worse.

I watched Dr. Who in the 70s, with my father, on WTTW in Chicago. It was the first station in the States to broadcast the first run episodes. I have enjoyed the reboot since the beginning. To me the highlight was when the Dr. met the Curator, and set off to find Gallidry. This new show lost me during the death of Clara storyline, and I barely watched the last of Capaldi's run as the Dr. The show lost me as a viewer after that, I simply didn't find it well written or have interesting storylines. The actors and actresses appeared to be going thru the motions, simply to collect a paycheck. It simply wasn't the story of an Alien and his police callbox. It no longer entertained me, and it seemed like they didn't want to retain me as an audience member. I'm not the demographic the writers etc, are looking for. Well that's my little rant. And maybe my I'm no longer relevant to the producers of Dr. Who. Oh well life goes on.

The interesting thing I've been seeing the comment sections in different videos it seems some wheelchair users and Trans are also in up roar about the portray of the said characters. Funny how the media hasn't mentioned them. Sadly the fandom has been invaded by toxic individuals during Jodie era they got rid of many Classic Who fans and now are even Turing on NuWho fans who started to watch it back in 2005. Total madness. I don't care if there are trans etc but there are ways to write a story where they are just normal people without the stereotype TikTok/Radicalised American version of Trans . And if that was done nobody would really of kicked off. As it would of been seen as a normal character look at Alpha Centuri from the 3rd Doctor a fan favourite. If I recall it's pointed out once as a Hermaphrodite but it didn't start banging your head with pronouns and other silliness. I think Sarah/Jo said the wrong thing a few times but nobody made an issue of it as it was the story that people were invested in and the dialogue was well written.

What gets me is that these articles call the "haters" which are only really being unpaid "Critics" for the most part, Anti-LBGTQ+ when more and more of them are of the LGBTQ+ communities, and there is no real representation going on as all the people being put in the shows over shadowing the Main Character in their own shows are Men who identify as Women, how the hell is picking one part of the community every single time representing the entire community, and to have them act like Bullies with arrogance and sexism I am actually surprised they did not have the Doctor belittled for being white as well. it is not helping anyone doing this, it is creating a platform for a minority to bully and attack anyone they want, and the Showrunners are joining in by attacking the Fans of the show for being what fans have always been, critics, true critics who care about the show itself. heck the comments and sub plot was not even that bad until they iced it with nasty, rude, arrogant scene stealing writing that made no bloody sense at all, I won't blame the actors, it is Disney and Russel T Davies who did this, they created this mess and have turned all fans against the show, those who loved this episode are in the extreme minority it would seem. even among the LGBTQ+ RTD has shown his true colours, and it is not a Rainbow, it's Green, Di$ney green. I hope they paid well Russell, because it cost you more than you know.
