Wow, just this morning (4th of July) Kaspersky labs (makers of the antivirus software) just agreed under protest to hand over the source code to the US government. The United States Government (NSA) already proved that it will just look at the source code to find vulnerabilities to use for its own malware distribution for spying and collecting intel. Why are these companies so stupid and falling for this? Do not give your source code to the US government especially after they already proved to be so untrustworthy and downright careless to let it's toolsets get into terrorist hands and be used to let WannaCry damn near take over the world.

I don't remember the exact size but it basically every song in existence all categorized for over 20 years. I never duplicated the database before Microsoft took it offline so I don't have exact information anymore. I actually avoid piracy these days since as an adult in the content creation business I now understand just how much it hurts an industry and even individuals that work hard to create stuff. That being said I won't get on a soap box and tell others what to do since I had to pirate software as a poor child to learn but thankfully these days almost every major software distribution has some educational version.

You're welcome, it's amazing just how many people assumed that only Microsoft had the source code. The truth is governments *WILL NOT* run software they can personally guarantee is secure and without backdoors and the only way to make that guarantee is to let them personally look at every line of code they are signing up to run. It even shocks people more that we let governments outside of the United States look at the code because their own versions of the NSA could be doing the same very thing to us.

I'm still wondering who told Microsoft about the exploits, given they seem to have patched them all before they were released publicly, however Microsoft said the government did not advise them of the issues, and no people are credited with advising Microsoft of the issues. I agree, seems most likely that the government did actually get in contact to get the issues patched which was probably a pretty good move given the situation. I didn't know that Microsoft gave out the source code in those manners, that was very interesting, thanks for letting us know that. I recently disabled SMB version 1 on all my systems, seems that it has had many vulnerabilities over the years and is only needed for compatibility with XP/Server 2003 so probably best to get rid of that too if you don't need it.

If the source code is available as readily as you say, doesn't it not matter that the exploits have been patched? I mean if the NSA sees what exploits have been patched, can't they just develop new exploits avoiding the patched parts? I don't get why M$ would allow anyone access to the source including gov.... Just tell them no. You don't get the source, use something else if want the source.... Is that contract really so valuable that they would screw over everyone's security to make a buck? Do they really believe that much in the benevolence of the gov?

Then they loose out on huge $$. Put your self in Microsofts position, you want every computer in current existance to run your product; including the governments, don't matter who owns that PC, you want it running your software. Government says in order to run your stuff they have to make sure it's the most secure thing for them to run. They ask you for the source code to analyze it for any possible way in and stuff. If you decline to give it to them, you lost huge profit and they may think you have something to hide. Give it to them they will do their thing with it and once they found all the exploits they fix it and run your software and pay you for a bulk license for thousands of computer systems. It's a Huge payday for you and your company.

Really like your videos but the vids you do about the Windows OS are by far my favs. You get to display your vast knowledge about the inner workings of Microsoft as only someone who worked there can do. I have to listen to them at least twice to get the full grasp of what you are trying to teach us. Thank you!!

Scratching the nose while trying to convince the public that Microsoft would never built-in backdoors into their software points to a flat out lie, simple body language 101 - not hard to see and very obvious... Cheers

Glad you are making more videos again Barnacules. I find it very interesting hearing what someone who worked at Microsoft has to say about all things concerning it. Especially with all the misconceptions and disinformation being spewed out by people who haven't a clue what they are talking about. It really doesn't serve anyone except themselves. Anyway keep it up!

I think Muhammed wants me to be mad at Microsoft so it's easier for him to dismiss my claims without investigating them himself. Just a friendly observation, no offense intended.

Keep up the great work man. If there's one person I trust on this subject, it's you. You should do an updated video on securing Windows 10 from telemetry for the creators update. I love the OS, after getting it more than a year after it came out. I hate the telemetry crap (partially because I have really bad internet. 10 down 1 up with constant "errors" which I assume is negligent throttling) but it's still been amazingly stable thus far and hella convenient. Again, keep up the great work Jerry.

You are the first Person that i see that understand how it works. The Human Brain and to reduce the attack surface is the best Weapon against Exploits. Keep ports closed, block any incoming traffic and outgoing if the ports are not regular ports like 80,995,443, do not allow any closed source Tool a Update (especially if the Tool is something that work offline........you cant know what the Tool send) and shut down stupid useless services (like remote desktop, telnet, UPnP etc) is the best way to prevent exploits.

I have to say I appreciate the approach you took in this video. It seemed a lot less biased towards Microsoft bashing and more informative as to the situation with the NSA leaks. This video presented several possible scenarios for people to consider and didn't immediately point the finger of blame straight at Microsoft. I have commented in the past about what I perceive as bashing and quite honestly expected this to be more of the same. It was a pleasant surprise and I hope to see more of the same. Keep up the good work.

Love these videos. It is really sad that we need them. Good explanation on the source code sharing. I work for a high tech company who create hardware and software for various companies and entities who require a full review of ALL and ANY code involved with the development of the product. This includes all embedded code. Even third party code has to be submitted as well for specific certification and if they're not happy with it we have to find another provider or, like other companies, buy the code or company in order to patch it or use it. This of course also explains the added cost to product production in today's world. Code certification costs tons of time and therefore money! It's not the DOS or Windows 3.1 world any more. Everybody has a computer and a large group of them think they have a right to the stuff on your PC and even more so to government systems. This cost will never go away and any protections created are only temporary. Whenever someone provides a protection, there are teams of folks working to break it. So stay vigilant about what is being dumped onto your computer .
