This is what I think the new Star Trek films miss. It is not a story of two friends: KirK and Spock; it is the story of three friends: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.
@marysueeasteregg

Yeah. Many of the funniest exchanges on TOS (and some of the most touching, too) were between Spock and McCoy. The new films have a lot of the Kirk-Spock friendship, and even (the 1st film anyway) a fair amount of Kirk-McCoy friendship. But not the Spock-McCoy side of the triangle.

“You know why you're not afraid to die, Spock? You're more afraid of living. Each day you stay alive is just one more day you might slip, and let your human half peek out” Spock’s lack of response to this tells me that McCoy hit the nail on the head. Vulcans are known for their honesty, and he couldn’t lie and say that Bones had gotten it wrong but neither could he admit that Bones was right - to admit that he does have emotions that he struggles to control would be in his mind a betrayal of what it means to be a Vulcan. So he says nothing. I felt really sad for Spock at this moment, he looks so vulnerable and conflicted here. At this moment he is trying to find his way out of a physical cage but he lives in a mental cage everyday. The difference is that the cage his mind is trapped within is of his own making. He alone holds the keys and he is his own guard.

Okay... But it's just a cheesy sci fi show from the sixties, that suffered from such low ratings it was canceled after two seasons, got a third season because of a letter writing campaign by mostly college students, and then got canceled for good after it's extremely dismal third season. Most people didn't even start watching it until NBC sold it off for reruns on UHF Stations in the 1970's. Although they managed to put together a couple of thought provoking episodes, and the special effects were well above average for the time, it was still just, mostly, swashbuckling, futuristic, fun and games.

one can make the argument that DeForest Kelley was just as important as making TOS the great success it became as Shatner or Nimoy - I would make that argument because of all the major roles, his choices as an actor were perhaps the most daring - both Nimoy and Shatner played roles that to some extent demanded certain characteristics related to their respective leadership positions - but as a ship doctor, many actors would have taken a safer route, and played to the generally paternalistic and emotionally detached physician stereotype - and not the hotheaded, emotional and argumentative doctor that DeForest gave us !! which made Bones as a doctor a thousand times more interesting !

This will no doubt get me flamed . . . but for all the talk of Spock's "unemotional" stolidity, I always thought he was actually a rather devious master at passive-aggressive emotional combat, if not downright cruelty. He delighted in taunting McCoy, "pushing his buttons" as we'd say, from behind his mask of superior oh-so-logical emotional detachment (or, more precisely, unemotional superiority). Please don't misunderstand -- I love the character, and of course Nimoy's portrayal is iconic. I simply think Spock was a more ambivalent character, in terms of his motivations and his behavior toward others, than is often assumed. In this case, McCoy stands up to him and calls him on his bullschitt, but he still does so within the context of assuming that Spock is (or at least is pretending to be) unable to feel, or even acknowledge, emotion. He never quite calls Spock out on his intentional emotional bullying and the underlying hypocrisy it reveals (i.e., for passive-aggressive behavior to really work, the person has to have a very deep, very thorough understanding of the other person's emotional makeup and needs, and then home in on them with fierce accuracy. Spock, rather than being unconversant in matters emotional, as he pretends to be, understands emotion all too well -- he's a psychic martial arts master at recognizing others' emotional weak points and turning those weak points against them.)
@googleuser7454
Жыл бұрын
I always wondered if that stemmed from feelings of inadequacy and the hypocrisy of Vulcan culture. It's even highlighted by his father Sarek's near bullying of his son (very passive aggressive and mean spirited) and various scenes of Spock losing control. Ironically, it is his Vulcan side that had the wildest rages and not the human side he seems to look down upon. He is especially short and even mean with people outside the Kirk circle so to speak. Correcting them brutally and publicly.
@jazzmanchgo
Жыл бұрын
@@googleuser7454 Good point about Sarek. There was a kind of sneering, smug self-confidence to him that used to irk me, and -- again -- seemed to contradict the stereotype of the emotionless Vulcan. I forget which episode it was, but someone unexpectedly showed emotion when meeting him; when they apologized, saying they were overwhelmed to finally encounter the legendary Sarek, he looked down his nose at them (really, that was how I read the expression) and said, "Well, you had good reason." Not quite the emotional cipher one might expect.
@googleuser7454
Жыл бұрын
@@jazzmanchgo That reminds me of something! Now, this isn't canon but in the novel Spock's World, it was said that Vulcans aren't really emotionless (which was already confirmed by TOS) in their own ideology (though TOS Spock would definitely deny that lol) but that the universal translator doesn't accurately translate Vulcan cultural concepts or ideology and that their form of logic (c'thia in Vulcan) is really "reality-truth" which is pretty much seeing reality as it is vs what you want it to be (or "calling it like you see it"). If that is the case, it might be that Vulcans think it is "logical" (or justified) to cut down someone to make them comply to rules of not only logic but how Vulcans see and culturally agree upon reality and that's how they express passion (not unlike the Romulans, really lol). They have a set of logic and ritual around emotion itself (hence elders like T'Pau overseeing pon farr and no Vulcan being shocked or upset by the violence). Their real nature peeks out in little digs and insults, the rituals, the constant need for meditation as a way to cope with the internal battle. Vulcans know how they really are (like Voyager's Tuvok) and this is how they keep it in check. As Spock would say, Fascinating.
@jazzmanchgo
Жыл бұрын
@@googleuser7454 Actually, I never quite got it straight whether Vulcans actually evolved to no longer have emotion in their mental/psychological makeup, or whether supressing emotion in favor of logic was a strongly held cultural norm that they internalized as "normal" at a young age, hence maknig it an indelible component of their mindset. It it was the former, then it would be neurologically impossible for a full-blood Vulcan to feel emotion; if the latter, then being emotionless would be more a matter of "choice," and one could choose to violate that norm. (On the other hand, Spock's "excuse" for his occasional emotional lapses was usually that he was "half-human," which might indicate a more hard-wired neurological phenomenon of some kind.)
@googleuser7454
Жыл бұрын
@@jazzmanchgo It is by choice as a collective culture and not innate biology. Different writers and series have varying explanations but it's canon that they absolutely have emotions (rather extreme ones) and the suppression is primarily enforced culturally. Their Romulans cousins have similar issue, but they deal with it by strict regimes and channeling emotion into a martial culture. Both cultures are using discipline to fight powerful urges. It's speculated (by some theories not sure it's canon) that they have certain wiring in their brains that make suppression easier, but it has to be reinforced with constant practice. That's why some older Vulcans like Sarek can get a disease and lose their control and of course pon farr. The still have the capability for raging emotion but they fight it

Hitler trying to commit genocide of a people. White racist doing what ever the hell they want to black or Jewish people.
