Many thanks! Great video. Just changed the filter and all worked out perfectly.

Love the profession , the way you jam the cardboard into the safety switches , yes we fill it no less than three times as the media vents. Vent crank case next time. Rags and towels, very expensive inhaled into stator and rotor!, have gone behind you piece of cakes befor. Love your wind up, standing on the mess you spilled on the ground. To heck with the rest of the correct job, plugs,air filter, battery check, auto charge, voltage, etc. You keep us busy! Great pose, every thing but the POP can.

was only meant for my cousin on how to change the oil. Just ended up with 10k views.. was not my intent. Yea forgot to vent. Good point. Cardboard can't hurt anything, not that delicate machinery. Been running now for over 6 years, has not missed a beat. Not my profession.

Carl Gennaro thanks Carl! Wife and I closed on our home 3 days before Christmas last year. Our generator came with the house both of us real stoked to have it. Electricians make a ton of money working on these because they know people are scared to death of them. Anyway pulled up the lid and control panel warned me it was in need of oil/filter change. Thanks to you, I got it done. I’m a slob too and I also like cardboard lmfao. Still have a lot to learn. Take care!

I can see you're not too worried about dripping oil in various places. Nonetheless, you got the job done and I guess that's what counts.

many thanks, how often do we have to change oil? Is your model 20KW? Thanks !

Mine in 20kva, exactly the same maintenance as their 22KVA - just different air filter - Generac says first 8 hours of use and every 200 hours after. If you never need it for emergency power and it runs that 10 minute warm up every seek that is 10minutes X 52 weeks = 520 minutes divide that by 60 = 8.6 hours a year = a long time before you get to 200 hours. I would say every 2 years is a good idea no mater what. I would think moisture in oil from condensation would be biggest concern over dirt and dust. I use magic marker and record it on unit under the cover. 2 years now go by in a blink! I think most units today give you a notice when it's time. But nothing like the old magic marker. I see I last did it when I posted this video. Dec 2016 but now not 100% sure, will go look under my cover. :)

Great information, thanks again, we at northeast just had a big snow storm today. Finally we had a power outage. My generator has been on for 4 hours. Since the usage is still way below 200 hours, i guess no oil change should be required, but do I have to check the oil level after 24 hours of non stop use? Also when I check the oil level tomorrow when the power comes back, do I have to shut off the main circuit breaker for the house? Thanks very much !
@CarlGennaro

It's just like checking oil on a car, dip stick. You do not have to shut anything off for that. Even if it came on it would be fine for a short time with dip stick out. I only check it after I change it, after it runs for 5 minutes and then let it sit for at least 15 minutes, then check it. Unless it is a really old generator I doubt that it will ever burn oil, not for 15 or 20 years. Again depends on how long it has run. Checking it once or twice a year can never hurt anything. Takes a few seconds. We love this things when power goes out, and I do mean LOVE!

The new models are 25 hours for the 1st break in oil and then every 200 hours after that. Older models were 8 hours for break in oil.

Hi, thanks for the video. I was wondering if there is a pump to remove the oil from the generator. Mine took like 20 min. It's that normal? I wonder if there is a faster way
@CarlGennaro
5 жыл бұрын
there are pumps to remove oil BUT in this case no possible reason to need one. Oil should be a little warm and that drain hose needs to be lower than bottom of engine. Should only take 5 minutes, unless you left filler cap on maybe, needs a vent. Once it slows down remover oil filter, then it's really vented.

Yes, there are various pumps that get this oil change done in less than 5 minutes ( just watched a generator tech yesterday use one for my yearly maintenance ). All he did was screw the output hose from the generac into the input hose of his pump---the other end went directly into a plastic jug---glug, glug, glug...he was done no fuss no muss, jug ready for proper disposal ( instead of draining the drain pan baloney ). First time I've seen a tech do it that way, but I didn't write down the pump info ( should have ). But I'm sure with a little searching these types of pumps aren't hard to find, just set one up with two small hoses ( inlet hose should have a threaded mate to accept the generator hose attached with a simple clamp ). I'm so glad he used the pump, because my oil comes out MILKY ( water in the system due to low use ), & he sucked all that mess out probably better than if it just oozed out. He said they did LAB tests to see if the milky oil was bad for the motor, & found it doesn't hurt---but it's a Hard pill to swallow when you witness that horrible crap come out of a very expensive unit.

it's nice when the generator sits high... mine is ground level and emptying the oil is a royal pain in the ass... It's always a good idea when closing the lid to lock it.. it creates a tighter seal.. Generac told me that.

They make a few different kids of oil extracting pumps, hand ones and air compressors types. You might want to check them out. One where you stick on the dip stick tube. They work pretty good. I locked my hood up for the first year, then stopped. Stays pretty clean in there but I guess it depends where it is located and how much dust is flying around

The manual says to turn it on and warn it up before changing the oil. I know how to change the oil but turning off the electric to the house to warm it up is another thing.
@CarlGennaro
5 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are asking or if you are. But yes warm it up a few minutes is best or you can just let it drain a lot longer. Warm oil moves faster. And best to just pull the fuse while working on it.

How do you stop the powder from the generator from going into the house if the main electric is on in the house? How do you run the generator without turning the power off to the house? And thanks for answering. I’m sure there’s something has to be done to the electric box next to the meter.

What grade of oil were u using
@CarlGennaro
6 жыл бұрын
All oil should meet minimum American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Class SJ, SL or better. Use no special additives. Select the appropriate viscosity oil grade according to the expected operating temperature. • SAE 30Above 32° F • 10W-30Between 40° F and -10° F • Synthetic 5W-3010° F and below - AND actually I don't remember, but I do use Synthetic all the time, I am 64 years old and lost count of how many cars, bikes and motors I have owned, Never heard the words from any mechanic "too bad you didn't use XX it would have lasted longer" NEVER, or have I wished I used different oil because something broke down. Just never happened. Pretty sure I was using 30 but I live in southern CA.
@reefseeker

5-30 I live in Southern CA. 10-30 is fine too. Does not get that cold here but it does do a cold start once a week. Sorry missed your question LOL.. SAE 30Above 32° F • 10W-30Between 40° F and -10° F • Synthetic 5W-3010° F and below right out of the manual

Actually it is a bad idea to pure unfiltered oil in the filter. nice try though.
@reefseeker

what is pure? mean pore? Nothing wrong with it. Just don't shake it. LOL serious, I have been changing oil in all kinds of motors for over 45 years, never had a motor break on me. Never seen anyone filter new oil out of a sealed bottle. Do you filter your milk before you drink it? Could be something in there. Silly really.
@reefseeker

Never heard of such a thing. You mean pore right? not pure? Can't believe I looked it up. Nothing out there. Never in my life did I see someone filter oil before use. Do you filter your milk before you drink it? Silly. Little faith. Maybe you bought Chinese oil.

Not really, less than a lawnmower. it's not for every day use. When your power is out you don't care. I can't hear mine at all with window and door closed, and it's right outside my bedroom. You have to have it completely quite inside and listen really carefully. It's happy time when it's running and everywhere you look is dark.
