what's wild is that the construction site scene is actually a thoroughly disguised 1-1. so the filmmakers made it work for that scene but then abandoned making it work for the training montage. personally, i see a missed opportunity in not using SM64 for the montage. they could have had a sight gag where all the low-polygon stuff is "actually" parkour gymnastics equipment like one sees on tiktok/Shorts.

Honestly, I think this a bit into some of the stuff you were talking about in your Celeste video. The 3D mario games (well, some of them) try much harder to create an actual world for mario to live and move around in. Even in those games, these areas feel kind of natural while still obviously being an obstacle course. The 2D mario games, in my opinion, try much less to come across as anything more than an obstacle course. Obviously it's still a weird choice to use it at all, but a training course makes some sense to me, since that is its explicit purpose in the movie and in the games.

I think they're kinda locked into presenting it as 2 dimensional though, since most of the obstacles they want to reference make very little sense in 3 dimensions. Like, he could just walk around the twirly fire things, maybe that'd be a funny gag? Iunno, it feels like the idea to reference gameplay at all has some inherent flaws, but especially if you're referencing a 2d game in a 3d movie.

The fire twirly thing primarily shows up in Bowser's castle in Super Mario 1. It can just be a flamethrower curtain almost as wide as the space. Of course it won't make as much sense if you stick it in a representation of 1-1, 1-1 is not a fire themed area!

In the 3D titles they're placed on floors a lot of the time in order to be actual obstacles. They're called fire bars btw.

The movie was fun but it was absurdly quick. Like. It felt like a plot was a speed run to get to references

Tbh you're definitely right when it comes to the movie having no plot. The story structure is just too rushed and honestly not really made for any kind of character or plot development. I really just think that when Nintendo was making the movie though. They wanted it to be like classic Mario, where it wasn't focused on the story but more focused on the fun of it. I like it because of the references and big hot turtle man but your point still stands regardless. PS: Love ur music and ur video essays, they're always fun to watch or listen to.

I thought the movie was just filled with scenes made for trailers to look cool without much plot tying it all together. The floating training course feels so empty??

I think there’s a weird aspect where the original game has become so iconic in its own right that people expect an adaption to capture what’s unique to it instead of figuring out how to translate the essence of what it’s about and trying to convey to a different medium like most adoptions are expected to do. There’s probably a lot of ppl that think it’s really cool to have scenes that look just like the games and I don’t think there’s any deep objective sense that they’re wrong so much as maybe missing out on what other options there are.

The biggest part of this for me is not just that the abstraction isn't resolved well, but that taking it out of abstraction has a lot of creative potential that's just lost. The question "how would you represent what the early Mario games do in 3d" isn't a rhetorical question: it is the movie's job to answer it in a satisfying way. "The 2d abstract obstacle course represents an actual 2d obstacle course" isn't wrong per se, it's just kind of a cop-out. Asking "how would you even represent this in 3d properly" should be the *beginning* of creativity, not the end.

I had this thought watching your first video and I believe the intent may be to reference super Mario maker more than the 8bit originals peach can place odd fiery chains in obtuse places (you wouldn’t find a fire bar in a plains level in the nes games I don’t think) because generating challenge is the nature of SMM a freedom to create incoherent level designs to test someone’s platforming capacity which I guess equates to heroic ability. doesn’t really cover the needless 2D aspect which I can really only Chalk up to those “this is what Mario will look like in 2014” vids from back in the day

I think that playing Take Me On over the Donkey Kong village was a less well conceived key jangle moment. apparently it was originally gonna be more DK style music, but they wanted to stick a pop song in it instead.

I don't know why you keep calling the training course NES mario? It barely resembles SMB (or SMB2/3), and it's full of course elements from later games. It's just general 2d mario, not NES specifically :p
