I'm about to do the same thing to my grandfather's fathers 1960 something Sears ro....air compressor. It turns on air is blowing straight out the one coupler. So I know it's worth fixing. The pressure reads if I cover the air coming out so I should be in good shape once I clean all bugs and gunk out the motor and the pump. It's a 12 gallon tank, but I'm excited. Just hope I don't need any part because might be hard tracking down 1960s model parts. Hope mine comes out looking like yours. Thanks buddy

Good job, I actually have a newer Craftsman 30 gal oil less, it's so damn loud my nerves would get frazzled having to listen to it while I was working in my garage, I ended up getting one just like yours free because it had no motor, I put a motor on it and I love it, the old oil filled compressors are built better and run much quieter than the oil less type they sell now. I wanted to sand blast with it, so I cranked it up to 175 psi, a few years ago and it's been fine, you just have to regulate it down for air tools or you'll ruin them, I learned that the hard way.

Do you mean the pump-input side with the check valve or the output side that goes to the regulator? The check valve may have a fiber washer between it and the tank. The output side has a transition fitting that accepts a compression fitting on flexible copper tube. Either way, they should screw off. I would try to remove the compression fitting first to just get it out of the way if you haven't already. Good luck!

Yeah, I took the motor and pump off so it was just the tank by itself. There are 2 big ports/plugs at each end of the tank that were difficult to remove but I did eventually get them off. After the pressure wash, I hydro-tested the tank to 190 psi. After that I dumped some used motor oil inside the tank and rolled it around to completely coat the inside of the tank. Good luck with your project!

Did you happen to replace any of the regulator assembly and/or manifold on this? If so do you happen to have the part number(s) you used? I have a similar, smaller, version (12 gal tank and 1 hp motor) that has a busted regulator knob and fitting. It is made of plastic and has seen better days (cracked, brittle, and now broken).
@DaffyJeffy

I did not. The spring inside the regulator was tired so i had to stretch it out a bit but it still works great. You should be able to find replacements for these parts pretty easily (and inexpensively) even if they are not identical to the originals. I also rebuilt a little Hitachi pancake compressor for work and used a $10 regulator I got on Amazon. The user reviews were very good despite the low cost. Best luck with your compressor!

Can you tell me where you got your pump parts? I have a similar compressor that belonged to my dad when i was a kid, I don't recall it not being around, but i think it was built in the mid to late 70's. I use it all the time to the point of abuse, and it works great, However it has developed oil leaks around the head and maybe the shaft. i just started looking , and so far have came up with Campbell-Hausfeld part numbers. I would appreciate your input please. ( model no. 106.170641 Sears). The decal on the side of your unit looks identical to mine. however mine is red.thanks

I cannot recall exactly where I got the parts I needed, but I know these pumps are pretty universal and used under many different brand names. I came across a similar Sears compressor but it's a 1 hp on a 12 gallon tank. The pump is identical to yours. I have been trying to dig up info because I'd like to go with a bigger motor and possibly pulley to get more cfm's out of it. Can you measure your motor pulley and also let me know how many cfm's at 90 psi yours produces? It looked like it is listed on the side but I couldn't read it in the video. I found a picture of the front page of the manual and it lists 5 different model numbers. I assume the pump is the same on all of them. I think yours is configured with the biggest motor but still trying to search a couple other models. Thanks

Hi there. The motor runs 3450rpm. It has a 2" pulley to a 10" pulley on the pump. The label says 8.8 SCFM @ 40 psi, and 7.4 SCFM @ 90psi. The model # is 106.175781. And I think you're correct; these pumps are pretty universal. Hope this information helps! Best luck!

Awesome. My dad gave me the same model compressor but the tank had a leak in a weld. I took the whole compressor unit minus the tank and mounted it on an old vertical Wayne tank(I believe 40-50 gallons). Finally had the bugs about worked out when the top head gasket went. Can anyone tell me if what I have done is legit in running this unit on a tank twice the size as it was originally on?
@DaffyJeffy
7 жыл бұрын
Seems to me it would be okay...pump might run a bit longer every time it has to cycle on. I wouldn't think this would be a problem. How long does the pump cycle at 125psi tank pressure? Just curious.
@barsh35
7 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing 5 minutes from 0 to 125 (was setting the pressure switch when the gasket failed) but when I put the new gasket in I can tell you for sure. I did measure the tank though and it appears to be more like 35 gallons. It is set up for 120 v but I may switch it to 240 v if and when I get it going. I was using an extension cord temporarily due to having it in the middle of my garage as I was working on it and it gave me no issues so I'm not solid on switching the wiring.
@DaffyJeffy
7 жыл бұрын
Is the motor you have "dual voltage"? If so, I'd definitely switch it over to 240v. Often there is a wiring diagram on the inside cover of the wiring compartment of the motor. I really think you'll be fine with a 35 gallon tank. Best luck!
