Loved the review, Katie. It came very timely for me as I just recently dumped the cartridge razors, electric shavers, and canned goop and returned to traditional wet shaving with a double-edged blade, shaving soap, and a brush. As part of that, I've renewed my interest in aftershaves and colognes, and Old Spice is definitely a pleasant memory that still smells great on me, particularly after a close, comfortable shave. I'm looking forward to more reviews of male-oriented fragrances!

Katie, that's the second time you've said that bergamot is "the peel of an orange" which is totally untrue. First off, all citrus oils come from the peel. Secondly, bergamot is a distinct citrus fruit which has a particularly complex aroma to its skin. It is used in Earl Grey tea. Orange peel smells like oranges, while bergamot has a sort of crisp, bitter herbal lime quality.

Old Spice was created by Albert Hauck (based on his memories of a potpourri mix his mother made) and launched in 1937 as "Early American Old Spice for Women". It didn't sell well with the ladies, so the next year the top notes were tweaked and it was re-introduced as "Old Spice for Men". My mother also loved this on my father. If it wasn't for Old Spice a lot of us might never have been conceived.

There's the 'Classic', made in North America and the 'Original' made in Europe. The Original is a much better scent, lasts much longer and comes in a glass bottle. The 'Classic' is weaker, doesn't last very long and comes in a plastic bottle. The 'Original' is the original scent and strength. It is also about 12 to 15 dollars, versus the 'Classic' is 6 to 8 dollars for us in the USA.

Thank you for this review. I love Old Spice! My great-grandfather used to wear it. Every time I smell it I am reminded of him. I really think that it is an under-appreciated fragrance! First being that it is so cheap and can be found in almost any local drugstore. Second because for so many of us it is a scent that is associated with an older male in our lives. That definitely takes away from the "coolness" factor for most!

Great review!! My dad LOVED the original as well and I have memories of him wearing it growing up. If I close my eyes, I can smell how it smelled on him. When he passed on years ago, there were seven bottles in red and white boxes under his vanity. He stocked up because he was worried they would discontinue it. My mom or I traditionally put one in his stocking every Christmas. I would have loved to hear his feedback about some of the other fragrances when I worked in the industry.

Wow, this was 10 years ago. Are you still doing these? I'm a big fan of classic Old Spice. It IS a Spicy Oriental as you said, and is in fact considered to be the world's first Spicy Oriental FOR MEN. Lots of people call it a Fougere without thinking, but it's not, even though it does share some scent profile with what some people consider the quintessential "barbershop" Fougere - YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme. I think the best stronger, fuller, more fleshed-out proper fine fragrance analogue for classic Old Spice is Paul Sebastian Fine Cologne. Another interesting note is that Old Spice was created in 1937 targeting g women. The next year they released the masculine-targeted version after just a bit of scent DNA modification. The women's version never took off, but as we know, the men's version has become maybe the masculine analogue of Chanel No. 5. What makes that possible is the fact that fragrances for men have traditionally been largely hygiene-oriented. The barbershop and so forth. Actual fine fragrance as art has been a predominantly feminine field, until relatively recently.

You're right, I misspoke - it would have been clearer to specify "bergamot is a kind of orange". Bergamot peel is indeed the source of the distinctive Earl Grey tea aroma, although the fruit peel is not the only source of citrus smells. The leaves, blossoms and twigs of a citrus plant also produce citrus oils, including pettigrain and neroli.

The only problem with this review - and pardon the anger, Katie - is that what's available now from P&G isn't the same fragrance that my father, or yours, used on a regular basis. Our folks used the one made by Shulton - my dad has, because of his problem of completing a whole bottle of anything (he's kinda OCD), literally dozens of the old bottles of this stuff. You know, the ones with the grey and metal plug with the porcelain/glass bottle. I'll have him try L'Homme Sage and see if it suits :)

Would that have been Hermès Equipage, released in 1970? That's really the only Hermès frag I can think of that would veer similar to classic Old Spice. Cinnamon. Equipage is similar to CK Obsession for Men, which I think is even closer to Old Spice. Cinnamon-heavy Spicy Oriental. Fuller, richer, creamier version of classic Old Spice.

Ha. Love your tag line, "smells". Just had a fit of nostalgia for Old Spice and thought I might be "old enough" now to wear it. To get the full Old Man effect, I'd wondered if I should roll around in moth balls before splashing some on. Going by memory, but I think the formulation is less potent than its counterpart from a generation ago. But it's essentially the same. It reminds me a little of Baby Powder with other notes, what I can only describe as a "softness," to which I can't attribute anything, so this video was helpful. I bought a bottle and I'll be splashing it on my youthful middle aged self and see what reaction I get.

Sorry folks, but the 'new' Old Spice isn't anything like the original fragrance. I started to use Old Spice when I started to shave, 'bout 60 years ago. I don't know what P&G did, but they ruined it. So, keep your eyes open at yard sales, estate sales etc for the contents of old medicine cabinets. I've found the 'Original" cologne as well as after shave. I'm out of it now. Don't know what to do except keep looking.

I have smelt hundreds,I mean hundreds of fragrances, but I honestly feel that the most beautiful (achingly so) fragrance is the original Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme (released in 1994). Whenever I smell it, I instantly imagine myself sitting in front of a smoldering fire on a winters night, and I've never been in that scenario, so this perhaps confirms the mystery. It is a bit sharp in the opening, but the dry down is pure poetry, rather soft. Suitable for both sexes IMO! What's your take on this?

I was thinking, do you think you could maybe make some videos where you present and maybe also review all the perfumes from a certain designer? @marxbroths Well, that's a valid question. Judging from the comments here, there is a really strong association between Old Spice and dads, and that might be hard to overcome. If you like Old Spice's interplay between spices, rose and woods, you might try the original Égoïste by Chanel (not the Platinum version), or even Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel. Coco Mademoiselle is a spicy, woody floral that would be great on a guy - and smelling it on you, no one would be able to place it as a chick fume.
