Wow.. this brings back memories. 55 years ago, my Grandpa took me fishing for the first time. All he took with us was some twine, a couple of safety pins, and an old butcher knife. I remember him saying," I'll show you how I fished as a boy". He made us bamboo poles right there by the lake shore and used the safety pins for hooks. We used sticks to dig for worms. Caught my first fish ever, a tiny blue gill, with a bamboo pole.

I have a Bamboo walking staff with a fishing kit built into it in vials (hooks, weights, 40' of Spiderwire) + a slim bobber. Got the idea from John D. McCann. Will modify it with an eye bolt at the end. I saned and stained the pole, wrapped the handle area with 550 Paracord (Pathfinder Paracord of course) and wrapped the ends in Ranger Band tips. I also have a stainless steel Micro Needlenose Multi-Tool that fits inside for de-hooking any fish.

LMAO at "ugly stick". I sure don't want to get a whooping with those things! Lol! Very nice cane rod for fishing Dave. I like it. I like that you grow your own bamboo. Is it difficult to plant and grow bamboo? And would you consider doing a video on bamboo growing and planting? Please and thanks.

I saw Ron Hood in one of his videos use a safety pin for an eye on a fishing pole, seemed to work pretty well. Not ideal in a self reliance scenario but definitely common man.

I dont know if you know this or not I learned it not to long ago but if you run the line throught the loop and tie it behind the lashing it makes a much stronger conection expecialy in comercial made rods as the eye is not very strong and will often tomes break off looseing the fish

I know bamboo grows in abundance in NC and in WV so it should grow there also, if you cant find it wild you can order shoots online, Do some research on breeds though as some/most bamboo can become a nuisance in time, it grows and spreads very quickly.

done this many times . raking the leaves back in a cane patch will provide plenty of worms for bait...Use a stick for safety because snakes like the leaves for cover. Never gets old watching you teach Dave...More brother

Not very experienced but I've used sewing thread and nail polish(hey.. you use what you have laying around... not mine! lol) and it holds the eye on great. Lots of repairs for cheap wal-mart rods haha.

Dave, you can also use a safety pin for the eye, just cut the clasp off and you are good to go. You can also bend it so the eye is sitting perpendicular to the poll if you want. Its just another option.

Aren't you supposed to tie the fishing line off at the handle of the rod, then run it up through the eye so you can pull the line without pulling the rod?
