He was treating them with respect and motivating them, and look what happens when you treat people with respect and get them motivated, they achieve things and actually enjoy working for one another. Nowadays there's to many people out there that want to keep you down and demoralised because there's money to be made. RP McMurphy might have been a lot of things but other men rallied round him to achieve a goal, that's the definition of a leader.

Dumbed down and stupid sadly. There's no story being told nowadays, just a concocted mess with fancy firework displays and sex. Plot lines that make no sense but they need to be there for effect rather than forwarding the story on. Falling Down is the best example, no big firework display until the story organically fell into it with the drive by shooting. Nowadays there'd be nothing but firework displays and 90% of the people attacking him wouldn't have ever met the facking guy, just attacking him because they need more fireworks for the dumbed down "story".

This movie was so popular back in 1974 because it has actual character development and sympathy for those characters that draws the viewer in over time. Plus it's got great human conflict and a power struggle between Jack Nicholson playing an anti-hero for the ages versus Louise Fletcher's strait-laced authoritarian figure in Nurse Ratched. It's a nearly 3 hour movie that goes by quickly because the storytelling is perfect. It's not all super-hero, gratuitous violent CG blow-up crap with grrrrl power messages and shit for brains dialogue, much like the popular garbage movies today.
@WileyCylas

As a special needs girl who’s also a writer, I agree. Everything is skin deep & thusly very patronizing. While I do certainly appreciate the “girl power” message, as it’s better than the average subservient tropes of primitive times, I must admit that, in addition to being very superficial, it’s also not relatable to the majority of us who are not in the often upper, advantageous echelons of society. What about poor girl power? Does everybody always have to be a “winner?” Oftentimes your protagonist will lose & the audience cannot & SHOULD not always get a happy ending.

*****Book Spoiler**** We are seeing this seen through Chief’s lense because he was there. (Cheswick was dead before this so he didn’t make the trip unfortunately.) When the boat is going around in circles while they’re all trying to haggle over the fishing lines that is when chief is looking down on them. “I watched, part of them, laughing with them-and somehow not with them. I was off the boat, blown up off the water and skating the wind with those black birds, high above myself, and I could look down and see myself and the rest of the guys, see the boat rocking there in the middle of those diving birds, see McMurphy surrounded by his dozen people, and watch them, us, swinging a laughter that rang out on the water in ever-widening circles, farther and farther, until it crashed up on beaches all over the coast, on beaches all over all coasts, in wave after wave after wave.”
