Great review! My son and I saddle hunted for the first time this past deer season 2020' he had a great season harvesting 2 does and a beautiful Iowa 10 pt. we both are looking to simplify even more and the one stick seems to be the ticket. Your review gave me great information and helpful tips.

Thanks! It sounds like your son had a fantastic year. I'm always looking for light and compact ways to hunt and a one stick certainly fits the bill.

Great review ... as usual! However, I must take you to task on the cam cleat. They've been used years (10+) ago on tree sticks . I believe Muddy used them with a rope system. Keep up the geeat reviews.

Great video. Very thorough. I agree that the flat part of the Monarch doesn’t do much. Nothing that, my favorite, the angled Scout can do. I think it would be a great idea to lose the top stand off and make the top flat part of the monarch the stand off and make it about 4-5 inches on top. Have it welded to the stick for it to be rock solid. Have the V in the top flat part of the monarch set up where it makes the top part of the stick angle out off the tree just a little past parallel with the tree. That will make the stick form a wedge off the tree between the rope when you cinch it down. I think that will bite better and give you more foot room on top.

To spend that much money and time to customize a brand new one stick everything about that is wrong and as a new Saddle Hunt or the idea of struggling to get up the tree absolutely eliminate this as an option thank you so much for the video

Great video as always. Very informative for guys like myself who are looking at getting into one sticking. Do you prefer the sail cleat with the full bury Amsteel or the Shaefer cleat with oplux and why? Thanks!

I think my experience is jading me on this one. When I was testing the flat strap, the strap came out of the cleat twice while I was standing on it. That has caused me to be nervous with the flat cleat even though the amsteel rope mod has never budged. So I lack some confidence with it but I like how quiet the amsteel is and will use it until it gives me an issue.

Thanks Spencer. This is my first year saddle hunting. Just got my Cruzr XC a few weeks ago and my beast sticks yesterday. I also want to give one sticking a try but wasnt fond of the sail cleat. I think ill give it a shot with the amsteel before i write it off. Take care and keep up the great work!

Great informative video! The cam cleat is just the best way to go.. Question: what kn is your quick link? I have a petzl 25kn and im sure it’s fine but still makes me nervous cause it’s so small lol. Debating looking at something bigger.

Very good video! What’s your opinion about the Monarch? I’m mainly asking for the comparison to the Scout. I have a scout on a Ultimate One Stick and love the set up but not sure I can hunt from the scout - mainly for weak side shots. The downside to the monarch would be more about the packability of the monarch but it looks to be better for shooting positions.
@SaddleHunter
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. If I were to buy again, I think I would just get the straight scout for the top of the platform. I've never used a scout so I can really speak to the positioning abilities of the Monarch over it.

You keep calling the included cleat as a cam cleat. That cleat is considered a "CLAM" cleat. It's an interesting idea, but does seem to have some shortcomings. I think a rope may work smoother than a strap with that or a similar-functioning CLAM cleat as long as it is sized properly for the chosen cleat.

I just got my 1/8 inch rope mod today from Custom Amsteel and then got a safety email showing a broken clam cleat. That was enough for me to order the Schaefer clam cleat! What does the head of the screw look like that I need to get? Is it a beveled machine screw that sits in deeper? Or should it be flat underneath the screw head?
@SaddleHunter
3 жыл бұрын
The beveled machine screw. They are called countersunk heads.

@SaddleHunter

You just rappel and climb back up. The climb back up will be very quick because the rope is already set in position.

Do you think there is an advantage to the monarch over the straight scout for one-sticking?
@SaddleHunter
3 жыл бұрын
Not really, I think I would just go with the straight scout in the future, mostly because I like a straight platform for my feet when I sit.

@@SaddleHunter I like that they are trying something also. Drill the holes and sell them in “kits” or DIY packages. Someone just needs to come up with a quite cam cleat.

Yeah because you are sitting in the saddle you really don’t work up a sweat at all and can climb pretty quickly.
@VKOutdoors

I like to explain why I think it’s too much work meaning too many steps. With this method, you 1. Set the step 2. Climb up. 3. Tie your 40ft line. 4. Untie the step and re tie. 5. Move up another 6ft then repeat step 1-4 again til you get to your height. Versus 3 climbing sticks with aider:1. Set up climbing sticks 2. Climb. Reaper step 1-2 to get to your height. Much easier and probably safer.
@chrisadams4342

@@VKOutdoors but you also have to think of only having one sub 4lb stick/platform with the ability to climb 40’ plus depending on how much line you have. I was skeptical also but it’s not hard climbing at all and getting to rappel down is a fun bonus and definitely safer than climbing down in the dark..in my opinion at least, im still new to it but it’s gonna be pretty slick on run and gun hill hunting where you have to get high up in the trees sometimes
@swampsnyper
3 жыл бұрын
I use to think this way too but I’m giving it a try and it seems easier than I thought. You actually have more steps when using more sticks. Don’t forget you have to take each one of those sticks off when you come down. Plus going up you have to unpack all of them. Hang them from you waist or something to carry them up. Deal with sticks hanging off of you as you climb. Progress up then down with a linemans belt. You still need a pull up rope to get your bow up the tree. Your rappel line can double as that. Double as your tether also. But I been using 3-4 sticks for over 15 years and I just have that system fine tuned. My reason for trying one stick isn’t the weight savings. It’s the packability and not having sticks hanging on my side as I climb and then when I’m ready to leave, just rappel down and strap one stick to my bag instead of wrapping up 3-4 of them, packing them together and securing to my backpack. I just think when I’m ready to go, one sticking and rappelling will be a lot easier. I’m not there yet but I think it’s worth a try.
