I’m only an AC but on every job I will charge my base day rate and then rent my kit to production. This is pretty much the standard in my area - your comments at 11:58 made me think you do otherwise sometimes and I just wanna let you know you could be charging quite a bit for that rental
@willvazquez3218

What I don't understand is that it seems like you aren't doing high end commercials and for your client work, a Komodo or a Sony FX3 would be good enough. Unless you are charging at least an extra $1200 rental for the V-Raptor, it doesn't make business sense. One other thing is that the Raptor is really clean and pretty much looks like an A7SIII/FX3 image. It doesn't render the magical film-like creaminess of an Alexa/Alexa LF, so meh, it ain't special, in my opinion. But on the other hand, if you are getting more money by using it, or having the camera is getting you more clients, or, you just like shooting with it because you feel like it, then what the heck, each individual has the right to buy with their money whatever they damn well please. Have at it!

This is the case for most people owning this camera on KZitem. Sony pulls much more weight in this category of work. I run 2 FX9s and those only made since because of the steal of a deal I got on those. Sometimes networks and documentaries hit me up through share grid and I get hired, but those producers are certainly NOT looking for anything Red. Just depends on the work you do. I get asked most for an Amira or FS7 honestly.

@@kyleranney so you are saying that producers and documentary makers don't like RED?
@kyleranney
Жыл бұрын
@@harshbidhuri2316 Not as all, I've actually been on several documentary shoots with better cameras. More often Arri than Red and almost always with a crew. I'm just saying that getting the right camera for the job is the thing to do. IMO most reads aren't the right camera. Especially for OMB. An FS7 or FX series camera makes more sense most of the time. And if you aren't getting rental for your gear then it's also not a good financial return. Even recently< I was working on a project that shot interviews on Red and it was a nightmare for post. They totally didn't need red and none of the other footage was Red or raw even. Took a full day to render the R3d to prores so a team could even work it. So it all just depends man. There isn't a solid black and white.

Having a RED or Arri doesn’t get you more work, it gets your different types of work. I’ve been hit up a lot about my work but when people find out I shoot BM, they immediately say that they thought I had a RED or Arri. It’s nice to know that I can get considered for those jobs, but in two years I’m definitely moving up from BM to do those different types of jobs.

It doesn’t get you more work but it gets your more expensive work. You can shoot more lower end jobs on BM but you can shoot 1 high end job on Arri which will have the budget of 5 BM jobs. You should be renting a Red then. BM is fine and is definitely in a different tier but if you spend 1 day shooting with Red and editing with it then it’ll pay you back exponentially. Then when clients ask if you shoot Red you can say yes and then rent it and incorporate that into the budget.
@earnieboy54

@@CinemaSteve good point. But I’d rather own to make more for my kit fee. Plus additional income on the rental side of things to other folks. But one thing owning has taught me is that you know what works and you take care of it. Rentals? I’ve got some horror stories for ya. 😆
@kyleranney

I agree with you here. The Red isn't going to get you hired for higher end jobs, usually they rent whatever camera they need. Maybe the DP owns it, but you want to buy a camera that you can also rent on the jobs that you are working. Buying anything over $10k for MOST people isn't going to make a profit. I know people will agree till blue in the face but it's a reality and many people running around with this camera and the Komodo, should have just bought an FX6/3.
@CinemaSteve

@@earnieboy54 Oh yeah, I have horror stories from renting Red's. I have 2 specific shoots where the Helium 8K just stopped working for no reason whatsoever. So it's not perfect. Red's reliability always sucks and I'll never buy one because of that. I've owned 2 Canon cinema cameras now personally and will always probably stay with Canon personally, and then rent professionally if the clients asks. For example, Sephora will only allow you to shoot on Red so you have to rent there or you can't shoot for them.

Hey @Brandon Washington, make a video comparing the image quality with a heavy stylistic grade, with the Raptor and the URSA 12k! I’m trying to decide between these two cameras and nobody has a good video comparing the codec of these two cameras. My dream camera is the Arri 35, so I’m trying to decide which camera I want in the interim period. You and I both know that the rec 709 codec from both cameras isn’t really a good comparison, which is what most youtubers talk about. But the codecs only show their “true” capabilities under load with heavy grades.

The fact that you pay $23,000 (plus accessories) for a camera that comes with issues and feels like a beta say it all about RED. Now, maybe I am a weird exception, who knows, but in my 12 years career as a filmmaker, working in 4 different countries around the world, I’ve never had one single client or production company asking me if I had a RED and I never lost a job because I didn’t have one. Yes, one time I had to shoot a piece of a commercial that was all shot on Arri, so we rented an Arri. My point is, if your client really comes to you and does the big voice saying you need to have a RED, well, they should have the money to rent an Arri, which is the real industry standard. Unless they are broke and they can’t afford to rent one, so they come to you and they expect you to bring it on set for free. Now, that’s a great client to lose. In general, people always hired me because of my skills, not because of my camera. I don’t wanna even go into the all image quality thing and if it’s better than Blackmagic or Sony because it doesn’t make any sense, but I can tell you that seeing people with a 20/50K dollars camera and a $600 Sigma 18-35 in front of that sensor says it all about RED customers. People should invest in nice lenses, not in a highly depreciating asset that will be worth 1/10 of it’s original value a year later.
@JedCamara

Facts. As a former Red scarlet dragon owner I switched fully to Blackmagic a few years ago and never looked back. It felt like it needed some firmware updates, and the Menu system for me was even worse than Sony. If someone doesnt wanna work with me because I dont own a Red, then I dont wanna work with them quite frankly.
