i read about Brendan McDonough and it says he was on the verge of becoming a hopeless, inveterate heroin addict. when his brothers were killed by a 3,000-degree inferno in nearby Yarnell, Arizona he suffered from seemingly insurmountable bouts of depression and Post-Traumatic Stress. but the light of hope that inspired him to keep living in one of his darkest moments-his daughter who needed him-inspired the firefighter to fight on against depression and inspire others to find their best selves, even if that means often looking beyond the self.

CAUTION: Spoilers. There is an aspect to this scene that people - who have not seen Only The Brave (seriously, go watch it!) might not fully appreciate. Miles Teller plays Brendan McDonough, the applicant being interviewed by Eric Marsh (Josh Brolin). At this stage of the film, Marsh's crew are on the very tip of qualifying to becoming Hotshots - elite wildfire firefighters who get to battle the fire head on. To say there is no room for error in that regard is a MASSIVE understatement. At some point in the film Mack - who we see in this scene telling McDonough the slots are filled that this crew have trained, put in the hours, each achieved their qualification for FOUR YEARS up to that point. Any error or mistake now, and they blow their only chance at getting it. Brendan comes to Eric as a homeless, college dropout, drug addicted ex-con who to top it all off is also now a father. Why Eric ever gives him the chance in the first place remains unknown until much later in the film - Eric was in his shoes before and decides based on that to give him a chance which of course doesn't sit well with the rest of the crew, in particular Mack.

@mattallen8136 that scene when Mac gets dumped by his girlfriend, and Brendan generously offers him his room out of kindness. You can see there's a moment when Mac recognises how horrible he was to him before, before he says "Right on, dude". The best friendship 🥹

Eric Marsh seems to have a heart when it comes to Brenden, even though he's an addict...so, as a recovering addict who used needles, I wonder why he asks Brenden if he ever used needles as if that would automatically disqualify him from the job. "I know you're an addict (as am I but he doesn't admit that until later in the movie), & I'll give you a shot...AS LONG AS YOU NEVER USED NEEDLES!! Really?? I don't quite see the difference. Just curious.

I can only guess but I assume using needles means a "stronger" addiction and therefore more likely to relapse....that would be my take on it

Some, they left out a lot and shortened the timeline of the crew's history leading up to Yarnell.
