My Lumi has just arrived and oh my word I totally love it. This is my first e-ink notebook and while I understand the writing experience may not be quite as good as the reMarkable 2, I’m really thinking it is plenty good enough for me. I use it mainly for reading and annotating documents and a bit of note writing. I am considering cancelling my reMarkable 2 order. I didn’t think I would use the frontlight but actually it’s nice to turn it on a little bit just to make the page a bit brighter/whiter. I know reMarkable has no frontlight so I’m not sure I’m going to like the darkness/greyness of the page now. I am not sure! But thank you Voja because your reviews have helped me know what I’m getting into before making a purchase - once we’ve taken the cellophane off the box there is no going back so it’s good to see all the hardware and software functionality in such detail. Thank you.

Great job, Voja! Congratulations on another excellent series of videos. Your videos are the gold standard for what a comprehensive product review should be. I have a request for your forthcoming third party apps video. I am an avid Google user. So I am very interested in how Max Lumi handles Google Drive, Docs, Sheets and Chrome. I’m sure gestures and stylus inputs are primarily for navigation and that a BT keyboard is required for working with Docs and Sheets. I thank you in advance. Finally, I have a couple of suggestions for any third party product developers that might be reading these comments. First, how about a screen protector with light gray or maybe beige masking along the edges? This is to mask the black plastic and/or metallic frame that surrounds the writing/reading surface. This would eliminate the harsh contrast between the frame and the screen mentioned in Voja’s review. AND PLEASE MAKE IT EASY TO INSTALL. Second, how about a clamshell folio with the lid holding the Max Lumi and the base holding a BT keyboard? True this would double the weight of the stuff one has to carry around, but you would essentially be getting an e-ink laptop with the acceptable limitations of the most excellent Max Lumi.

I just purchased an Onyx Boox Max Lumi, basically for uploading and reading music on the piano. I was first looking into the PadMu, but it's really very expensive and really only good for reading and no where near the other stuff you get with the Max Lumi - and the PadMu is an Onyx Boox streamlined for music pdfs. I watched your entire series of reviews for the Max Lumi and want to say thank you. You are better than a user manual! God Bless.

I am very much looking forward to your review of the Note Air. While Max Lumi specs describe the screen as "E ink flexible screen with PMMA flat cover-lens", Note Air has "E ink HD Carta screen with AG glass flat cover-lens". I'm very curious about how the writing experience will differ between the two. I currently have a Samsung tablet and writing on glass annoys me to no end. I wonder if I should try a screen protector for the Samsung or get the Note Air.

Hell of a review. As an academic trafficking primarily in large PDF documents, you've convinced me that the Max Lumi is likely going to be my One Device. It'll allow me to teach better via zoom, type monographs without eyestrain, take notes at the same time that I read, and mimick paper pretty ok too. I'll keep the Remarkable 2 coming, but it's highly likely that I'll return it after testing. Thanks for your work!

Here’s a funny thing: I remember in one of your videos for the Max 3 (I think), you had mentioned how for the price of the product, they should include a stand, even if it’s a cheap one, to “complete the package” since it is a big device...this came to mind when I saw the free stand they did include with the free case. Thanks for all the wonderful work you've done on these - much appreciated. I'm a writer, so am considering it as a laptop-replacement-lite. I'd love to know how well it works with Google Drive/Docs/Sheets and a bluetooth keyboard. My usual working setup would be using split screen mode in landscape with Google 'tabs' (are these possible in a similar way I'd get on my laptop?) for several Google Docs/Sheets on one side and an internet browser with several tabs (thesaurus, dictionary, wikipedia, google search, etc) on the other. It's only really text I need, so I'm not worried about any video or image issues. Also, in terms of hardware, I'm interested in whether there any keyboards/cases that might make it possible to do this without a tabletop, so on a lap for example. If your apps review could give an idea of whether some of that might fit together, that would be amazingly helpful!

Many thanks for the thorough and really useful review vids! Regarding apps (your upcoming vid), I'd like to know how a PDF-reference management app such as Mendeley works on the Lumi. Academics don't just store PDF articles in folders they create on device/in cloud; they store them in and read them from a referencing program such as Mendeley (or Zotero or Endnote). Does the Lumi allow stylus markup of a PDF via the Mendeley app? If not, can PDFs easily be exported from Mendeley onto the Lumi for markup and then imported back into Mendeley? Also, what is handwriting input like in note-taking apps such as Evernote and Onenote? Is it possible to make handwritten on a Kindle book? Thanks if possible!

Well done Voja. Thanks for this. One thing that is not discussed, is the fact that this device uses Android, which is fine, but perhaps a bit overkill for a note-taking device. Case in point-- I own this product AND the RM1, and when I want to jot down some notes, I always end up on the RM1. That said, I prefer the Lumi for sketching (Industrial Design type stuff) because of it's bigger surface. I, too, look forward to getting my Note Air soon!
@ChippWalters
3 жыл бұрын
Oh, and it took me a couple hours to get the Lumi setup-- it's way more complicated and when you want to add in all the Android goodies, Calendar, Discord, Google Apps, etc. it can take quite some time to get everything settled. Within 3 minutes of opening the RM1, I was up and going. One other point which should be stressed is the customer support and updates-- which I think must be taken into account when purchasing such devices. So far I have no issue with either company, BooX or Remarkable-- but listening to your videos does communicate to me that RM is just not a responsive company and more focussed on hardware than software. So...there's THAT.
@heiligerklabautermann
3 жыл бұрын
@@ChippWalters Well, your point with setup the Lumi might be right, but with remarkable you don't even have the possibility to install apps like Calendar and Discord. So I don't really see that as a negative. It depends on you how many apps you want to install. To do the same as remarkable can you don't need more time than on remarkable. Plus I spent a lot of time with installing "hacks" on remarkable because their software doesn't offer these kind of features (like a clock, pinch and zoom, bookmarks etc.)
@ChippWalters
3 жыл бұрын
@@heiligerklabautermann Of course you are correct. Remarkable does not have a calendar or other apps and that because it's not trying to be a general purpose computer/tablet. Thanks again for another thorough review. I especially appreciated the cons. I agree with why make a required screen protector and not apply in manufacturing. Here are some of my thoughts I'm wondering if the non-solid black background is a product of dpi being 207. Maybe you can do a comparison with other e ink screen with higher dpi. For the uneven front light issue, l appreciate what the Onyx did. This coming from someone who grew up with a green-lit front screen of palm pilot and add-on light GBA. So yeah, in the pitch black I am not surprised you would notice it being uneven. It's the limit of the front light. So your comment that regular use in anything other than extremes situation is correct. But for nitpickers it good to know especially for the price. Now the big elephant in the room. The ”dead pixel” issue is a big concern. The question is whether more will show up in the future. This is a limitation of not having a device long term. And if more do crop up will the manufacturer replace it? Only time will tell, but it is something to consider when forking over $1000. Again something a person should consider when deciding this because at this price point you can get a computer, a pretty decent monitor, or even an e ink monitor. I also agree the air product is a much compelling product for the most consumer. Just the size alone, make it convenient to use everywhere. This assumes zooming is perfect. Yes, price is also a big consideration but I don’t think most people consider portability until you own an iPad 12.9 pro or used the undocked larger surface book. Its size and weight start to become unwieldy when trying to use one-handed for any given time. Next Voja, you can show all the cool things you can with the Lumi. Like using it on a monitor stand as a second monitor for reference material**edited just notice you had covered on previousepsiode**. Using it as a laptop, outdoors in the middle of a bright day. Reading with it, using a Bluetooth device to turn the pages(I am one of those individuals that find it distracting to swipe across the page while reading). And the geeky side of me since I know you’re also a developer, using VIM/EMACS to write code and compile it. This last part especially since these tools were designed at a time where screen latency was a lot slower. Thanks again for the great and thorough review. Keep being your awesome self.

Default pen on Lumi is probably the worst pen I've ever used (standard Boox pen). So, a better pen is a must. Hi! I really like the videos! Please try OfficeHD TextMaker (the pro or the free version) I currently use it in Note2 and is the closest to full pc office that i could find. I really like to know how it works in the 13 inches screen. For me microsoft office isn't good enough to write academic papers....but officehd is. Thanks!

Well well, is that a Behringer Neutron I spot there? What are the other two? And do you have any music somewhere?
@MyDeepGuide

Neutron, K-2 and Pro-1 in my custom made stand for under 10$ :) Had a video about it too. As for music, yeah you can find it in Bandcamp, Spotify, Amazon etc, under my full name and under Angry Dwarf (but that's much harder Goa and Pay trance stuff) :)

If you mean if I am affiliated or if I have a like over which I can get something if you buy over the link, no. I am independent, so I don't have those kinds of promotions.

@My Deep Guide Voja Please explain if someone need the screen protector (especially on the Air later on). And does it change the view or writing feel. Besides all the user generated bubbles;).
@alibeydoun524

The screen protector reduces the crispness of the text. I removed mine. It is a super cheap screen protector. Onyx has strongly encouraged me to keep it on in an email, but I cannot stand it. I am trying to explore other options if the screen is really as fragile as they say.

@@alibeydoun524 Thanks for your reply. As the Air is glass I hope I'll don't need one and they only use it to increase the friction for the writing feel.
@MyDeepGuide

Every non-glass screen protector adds 3 negative aspects: 1. Increased distance from the writing surface 2. Decreased touch input precision 3. Decreased visibility of the screen content Because of these reasons, I don't use them. I prefer to use a cover and be careful with how I use my devices. reMarkable is plastic front, which should be more prone to scratches than glass, yet after 3 years of use and hundreds, if not over a thousand pages written, screen looks and performs great. It all, of course, depends on the individual, how reasonable, and mindful of the device they are, but if used normally, I don't see not using a protector as a problem. As for companies strongly urging to use a protector, well, if they strongly urge, then it needs to come factory pre-installed.

@@MyDeepGuide Thanks for detailed answer. But I'am afraid why they offer these protection. Thought maybe some of the available pen nibs or even the original could micro scratch the glass. The rM2 and Air uses glass, so I was even more confused.

@@MyDeepGuide thanks for your reply. Do you see the Max Lumi being able to withstand the test of time from a durability perspective if I use a case cover and only the Boox supplied pen and nibs?

Hi Voja, when You'll be testing apps, can You please try to test app called "Logos Bible App". It's a Bible app and it's very logic to use that kind of app on ebook reader since it is basically a reading app. But in the same time it is very heavy on a system because it interconnects multiple sources. Anyways, it would be interesting to see how does the devise handle it and it would interest me personally. Thank You Voja, that would be awesome

Dear Voja, I want to buy a Lumi. Only I still don't know which seller to choose - shop.boox, ereader.store, or amazon. I found some comments that Lumi may come with defects and I am looking for a trusted one. If I get some defects, also I want to easy options for changing and returning because I read some people even can't normally change items. Could you give your opinion, please, where to buy? Kind regards, Jevgenija
