Sam Raimi's 1993 sequel to Evil Dead 2 was marred by studio interference on behalf of Universal Pictures. While he was granted creative freedom by Dino De Laurentiis during shooting, Universal provided no such freedoms during post production. Raimi's 96 minute directors cut was considered too dark and once the MPAA slapped it with an NC-17 rating, Universal handed the picture to outside editors who butchered the film in the vain hope of a PG-13 rating. They failed.
Luckily, while Universal retained rights to their bowdlerized version, De Laurentiis and Renaissance Pictures retained rights to the original cut. And in 1999, they licensed their preferred cut to Anchor Bay for VHS and DVD release. The DVD release contained both the theatrical and directors cuts; both versions were released as separate VHS tapes with the Director's Cut being a Limited Edition of only 50,000 copies.
