I am still impressed by this video 20 years later.... It has a great dark atmosphere that fits the song perfectly. And I also love the concept of so much perceived isolation from what would otherwise be a bustling and average scene of time lapses of city life... Monsters exist and they certainly are us. The masses of unappreciative and destructive, apathetic beings; living only as a blurred enitity of little consequence in a much grander scheme that we cannot see because our eyes have been blinded to it. It also becomes apparent in scenes (such as with the golf), that the character portrayed simply cannot fathom the novelty of such a game, as in her grand scheme of things, it's futility and pointlessness are blatantly dismissed as insignificant in her view. Existence seems so overwhelming that just the mere concept of existence is simply the only thing deemed as important. To wander and discover, observe and collect data... Then filter extraneous data and process relevant data for purpose of learning survival skills and knowledge. Much like a condensed parable of the evolution of humanity; search, observe, manipulate using the 5 senses, compare with past data accumulated, learn, purge extraneous knowledge, execute use of new data, use new data to begin the cycle again. Very primal video in a sense, but also very confusing and befuddling, as it shows how society has come to a spiritual and tangible standstill, each member blindly running the rat race, unknowing of the wonders right outside of the breadth of their perception. The main character; an odd anomaly in an otherwise flawless system. Representing the ideal that we still possess the power to break through the gossamer veil shrouding the true life we can nearly ascertain with our fingertips, but usually never reach. Evolution in the form of regressing is a possibility, and perhaps a glimmering hope for days forward. Awesome Video.

Good thoughts. I was really struck by the part where she sees the plant growing in the alleyway and is amazed by its vitality, by the incomparable beauty of nature. And right after that: the tired, sick, flabby man chugging coffee and eating bad food while standing up in a small shop, rushing to get back to "work" on whatever tedious part he plays in this massive machine-cage we've built for ourselves. The world, nature, takes care of itself. The balance is maintained despite an unimaginable number of variables at play. We are the only species that ruins that. Because we can't just be.
@adamavery3906
8 жыл бұрын
All of our parts to play are tedious... I think the plant was a really an important message, about thriving amidst decay, and the indomitable will of life to always blossom, even when all odds are against it. It's nice to see there are still people out there that read between the lines and artists talents are not wasted on those with such commonplace thought as to not understand or appreciate it.
@Margatroid
8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I totally got the same vibe, that the plant was the one shred of hope in the whole video. No matter what we do to ourselves we'll never get rid of the basic strength of nature, and it offers a keyhole through which we can see a way out of this mess. I was actually looking earlier today at some wood on an old shack which was covered with lichen and moss. Really beautiful, probably been decomposing for half a century. And suddenly I envisioned that when that process was over, all that remained would be nutrients that would go into the soil, which could grow a new tree that would eventually rot in the same way as the wood that old shack was made out of. In the video, the screens she's looking at flash really fast: "PLASTIC NEVER DECAYS." And that's what hit me earlier, looking at that old wood. Even the nails driven through it were slowly rusting into oblivion. But we're creating a world of garbage junk that will never go away, that nature can never use as nutrients. And we don't even make plastic stuff WELL, nowadays. All manufactured to fall apart and fail, so more plastic crap can be sold. It's the most ridiculous short-sighted way an organism could possibly live, when you think about it. Life on earth is like an endlessly recharging battery, except for us. But it doesn't have to be this way. Maybe we need a serious environmental catastrophe before we'll learn to change our ways, to fundamentally see conscious existence as being about something other than buying and selling and consuming. But at the very least, as you pointed out, art like this video can serve to wake some of us up. And we don't all have to live this way, to let this machine control our minds and our lives for the brief spark of conscious existence that we get to enjoy in this universe. (Incidentally, I'm listening to the 30 minute version of The Box right now, and after watching this video, I finally realized why the cover of that single is a picture of a house. The Box. What a perfectly elegant metaphor for this modern human state of mind.)

This video is still relevant to today. All people seem to do is work and not care about taking time to slow down and enjoy the moment. I live in a small town and it's like that here. I can't connect with anyone and it gets to me so much. I'm planning on moving to a larger city but, not to large. I don't know. Wow this video really impacted me.
@Margatroid
8 жыл бұрын
I think it's even more relevant today than it was then, because of smartphones and the way internet addiction has embedded this external machine-world deep inside our minds. I totally relate to what you said about not being able to connect to anyone because they can't relax and just exist in the moment and appreciate it... Always in a rush to do "something else" which they then rush to do something else from. Always worried about "missing out" when in reality they're missing out on every present moment of their life. Anyway, I hope your move helped you.

You're very right. Back when this video was made you there was an emergent desktop internet culture but not a social media/mobile device one. Now I find myself pulling the "check your phone moment" in a retail line or other socially random situation. Back then I simply bullshitted w/ strangers around me. I'm Gen X and I miss those days: to find a random haha moment w/ a stranger, but I almost never have now. I feel more alone at those times surrounded by people and it's a growing trend of dial into the the virtual world at any chance over the real present one because it seems more seductive or more tailored to you, but it's a lie. You're never closer, because that virtual connection can't make it as real as seeing a face light up to your reaction to them.
