The Indochinese Tiger, Panthera tigris corbetti, in Thailand.
After taking our cam from the previous location where we got the Clouded Leopard, we travelled to the Western Forest Complex in Thailand, where tigers are still known to occur. However with a total estimated number of 200 tigers left in the whole of Thailand, chances are incredibly slim to camera trap this rare big cat that is on the brink of extinction.
We have enough experience to know that if you leave a camera trap for three nights in the jungle you should not expect anything. We even regretted a bit taking the cam, but well if you don't try...
While picking up the cam after these 3 nights, we had 42 videos on it. Usually there are about 10 videos from setting up/ picking up the camera. But that still leaves 30+ videos. Not bad!
However, soon while checking the results on the little screen it turned out the cam had been filming every few minutes on the first day, probably due to the sun and moving leaves that had triggered the infrared sensor. So we are skipping through about 30 clips without a single sign of wildlife. There were no animal tracks on the trail in front of the cam, so our expectations got even lower.
About 30 videos without wildlife and then there was the video of our car from the previous day when we drove by without checking the cam, at 18:10PM.
But then totally out of nothing the next video showed this huge male tiger walking by just 1 hour and 40 minutes after we drove by in the opposite direction.
Three nights and we got a tiger! That's simply amazing.
And it's our first tiger!
The animal has a radio collar around his neck so apparently he is part of a research project.
We were speechless.
Let's hope the poaching pressure will stop so these magnificent creatures can stay with us forever.
