It is well known that in Louisiana the trout over three years old generally don't hang out with small trout. A three year old trout may in fact eat a small trout. because speckled trout are viciously cabalistic.
Therefore, if you want to find the larger class of trout, there is some validity in fishing for them in a different area than where you commonly catch small trout. We wanted to catch larger trout today, and so we followed that logic and successfully implemented a plan to find and catch 20 inch plus fish.
Central to the plan was to target the trout with jerkbaits and twitchbaits and in habitats they prefer. This includes rocky shorelines and shallow areas along the MRGO channel.
The 20"+ fish that caught today were released and entered into the Release Over 20 conservation program. This action will give these fish another chance of serving until another spawning season when they can produce more than 10 million eggs. A link to the form where fish can be entered into Release Over 20 is here: releaseover20.org
