After 3 months of quarantine in Isla Aguada, Mexico, it's time to head back North. Scout, our new furry family member, joins us to RV for the first time, plus we find some fantastic camping by a waterfall along the way.
In this week's episode it's time to leave our quarantine spot at Freedom Shores Hotel & RV Park, located on the small fishing island of Isla Aguada, after 3 months of staying put. We hit the road to return to the USA, but we're taking out time so we can still explore some new places and favorite spots along the way.
Some areas of Mexico can be quite sparse when it comes to campgrounds and overnight spots besides gas stations (yes, Pemex gas stations are very safe and friendly to RVers stopping overnight). We challenged ourselves not to stop in all the same places, and lucked out to find Balneario El Salto near the town of Acayucan in the state of Veracruz. This private compound is a local swimming area with beautiful waterfalls and even has ziplines that criss-cross over the canyon! We paid 60 mxp/person for overnight dry camping by the river, and it was a great place to cool off and explore before continuing on to Puebla.
After a long extended climb (over 30 minutes of continuous uphill driving), we reached the inland plateau encompassing Puebla. At this higher elevation (over 5000ft above sea level) it was both cooler and far less humid than the jungles we've been in for almost 4 months! We returned to one of our favorite campgrounds, Trailer Park Las Americas in Chulula for a few nights relief from driving, but sadly due to COVID-19 the pool had to be drained. This is a very walkable area with a modern shopping center a few blocks away and many restaurants and shops within a few minutes stroll. The grassy campsites and full hookups certainly help.
We found a nearby park to practice Scout's leash training. Ecoparque Metropolitano de Puebla is a beautifully manicured park right in Puebla. It's only a 15 minute drive from the campground in Cholula and $15 mxp to park your car.
