‘Young Gods of Na Sionna’- is Irish for young gods of the Shannon (Largest river in Ireland). “I used to live in Limerick and my bedroom overlooked the river in the city, I would see the search and rescue helicopters out all the time, looking for people that attempt suicide there at the bridge. I would think about these people a lot when I was drinking. I really believe that the youth were sold out in this country during the recession. They were treated so badly, and basically given the message to leave. No help was there.
The song paraphrases James Joyce in the chorus ‘Sometime’s she (Ireland) eats her young’ and immediately transitions to a stream of consciousness addressing the final thoughts of a human being before suicide,
In my personal experience that has been the case. I feel that artists who write songs about suicide and do not talk about their own experiences fall short of the mark. This song is subconsciously about my own suicide attempt when I was a young man. It is a deeply personal subject that I find difficult to talk about but I can express through my music.
Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy the official video when it comes out in 2018.
